Cleaning belly button

My son is 13 months and when he was much younger I was able to clean his belly button with a cotton bud to get rid of dirt. I've tried to do this a couple of weeks ago and he got all fussy, using his hands to brush me off, wriggling and crying. I know it may feel uncomfortable for him but I really need to clean out his belly button before it collects too much dirt. Is there an easier way of cleaning belly buttons? Would appreciate any advice.
 
HI , I did this 3 weeks ago and so happy that I got rid of all those dirt. He was very sound asleep and did not even twitch. Wished I thought of this earlier, save my son from discomfort. Thanks anyway.
