Hi,
May be moving to HK soon with my 1.5yr old son. Am looking for suggestions on the type of structured childcare to put him in as will be working full time and do not want to engage the use of maids/nanny to look after him as it will not enhance his development.

Thanks :burnout:

Hi,
I would also like to know what are the charges for hiring a current qualified native english speaker teacher .
thanks :lovedface

I believe it would be quite difficult for you to find a traditional type of daycare centers like we have in the West or other countries because of the cost of nanny's/maids structure.

When we moved here last year, I tried to find such a place, and I was told that MAYBE some local Chinese would have access to it via government sponsored programs, so I gave up the search and hired a maid. If your company has hired you a relocation specialist, perhaps you could ask them for suggestions (the ones assigned to us laughed in my face when I mentioned the type of daycare I wanted). Good luck

Hi HKfornow,
How much does a nanny/maid cost in HK? I did hear that they do have day nurserys islandwide. Maybe will need to check on it when we arrive in hk.

Lists of Childcare Centres

The Social Welfare Department oversees all creches, nurseries, and childcare centres. A list of the is available on theSWD's website: http://www.swd.gov.hk/doc/family/occs.pdf

The list is divided by region. You do not have to be a recipient of social welfare to make use of these centres. Many of them are curch related, so if you are (for example) Roman Catholic, you might prefer one of those as opposed to (say) a Lutheran one.

I have 1 friend & 1 acquaintance who were very pleased with one of the childcare centres in Sai Kung: St. Simons (up the hill from Peperonni's, about a 2 minute walk).

You apply to the childcare center for your child's place directly. My acquaintance who sent her daughter to St. Simon did not speak any Chinese and was able to relate to the staff OK. Her daughter became fluent in Cantonese (added benefit).

sorry. the last post in incorrect.. .the maids were given an increase a couple of mnths ago to $3330....not much i know, but $50 is a lot to them....

hkfornow/carang,
thanks for the information. Will only use a maid as last choice. Managed to get the list of day nursery. will visit those around the area once we decided on which area in Hk we will be staying. :)
