Cheapest way to go to go Private?

Hi ladies! Does anyone know which hospitals and obs packages are the most cost effective? We don't have maternity cover and I have been having so much anxiety over possibly delivering at QE hospital. I would like my husband to be with me more than visiting hours (6-8 pm) and I know that I won't be able to get the much needed rest after delivery with so many other people around with babies crying. I am terrified after a few experiences during the check-ups I've had at QE. Any info would be greatly appreciated

you could look into the different types of rooms - i know that doctors charge according to room type - so instead of staying in a single, you might consider a double room / some hospitals like HK Sanatorium have rooms with 6 beds in them (still considered private)...honestly haven't visited the rooms myself, but the information is on the websites so you can browse them before scheduling a tour of the facilities.

good luck! :)

Thanks leslie it seems that Sanatorium and St.Pauls are the cheapest on HK side when it comes to packages. I understand that doctor and anesthetist fees are charged on top of that. Can anyone share how much those cost you? I am due on September 1st so I am loosing time and might not get a place.

Hi Baby G - Sanatorium is as expensive as anywhere else but yes there wards (6 bed) might be more reasonable. St Pauls's is reasonable though.

You have to find a doctor first. The doctor will tell you the fees and help you book into a hospital he delivers at.

If you're "working backwards" from the hospital, the easiest way is to call the maternity dept at that hospital and ask them which Obs deliver there. As you're a late booking (by HK standards) try to find one that delivers there a lot as it seems they have more success in getting their patients booked in.

A private Obs charges for every antenatal appointment and then to attend the delivery. Some do fixed cost "packages" for patients staying in shared rooms.

You will probably also have to pay a paediatrician to check the baby once it's born- check if that's included.

I think you only have to pay the anaethetist if you need him/her- it's not a retainer.

Thank you everyone. I've been to 2 public checkups and all the rest have been private doctors. I've seen Dr. Ghosh, Dr, Ho and Dr. Hon. I was just wondering if anyone could share a more cost effective way. Is it impossible for me to budget around $40,000 for a private delivery? I actually feel very guilty to spend so much money on private but at the same time I am petrified of being "alone" at the hospital. This is my second and I had a previous C section at a private hospital in Malaysia and got excellent care. I am not bothered about how many people are in the ward, I just want to know the person delivering my baby and have a nurse that would show some care towards me and of course have my hubby there with me. The nurse at QEH told me that if they were busy, my husband would not be admitted for the delivery.

You can also take a look at Canossa Hospital charges on their website - the cost is probably between St Paul's and Sanatorium.

My baby was borned @ Sanatorium last Christmas, I stayed in the 6 beds-room, since the hospital just had been renewed in the recent years, the room was very nice, each bed with own TV monitor (incorp. PC). I got a "window-seat" bed (more spacious) with an extra charge of HKD 200.

Since it was a public holiday and I went thru an emergency C section, there was extra cost. Forgot the details but in total I paid about HKD 60,000 for everything (hospital, doc's charge, admin charge)

Visiting hours were 8am to 8pm. But my mum came to visit me like 7am something in the morning and the nurse still let her in.

One funny thing I remember was a charge of "husband accompanying to surgery room" - HKD 500

Not sure if you can still reserve a room now though, ppl usually paid deposit like 6 months ahead but I suggest you to go and have a look first.

canossa is also more reasonable in prices - but i know their maternity ward is quite small in comparison - i'd find a doctor quickly and see where they can deliver out of and then have them make the booking for you....you can probably call up the hospitals that you are interested in delivering at and ask them which doctors deliver at their hospital - should save you alot of time!

The trick is to find a Ob/Gyn who will give you a package. I went with Dr Ghosh. He charged $23000 for a natural delivery, check ups prior to delivery, one post check up and routine tests. Package was $33 000 for c-section. Then you need to ask how much the anesthetist and pediatrician charge so you can find someone who fits your budget. It is not easy as they don't seem to disclose this info easily. Then you need to go for the cheapest room type as otherwise ALL costs can as much as triple.I had a standard room at the matilda, had a natural delivery and paid $65 000 for everything incl scans, meals for husband etc. Good luck

The thing to bear in mind as well is that the costs can balloon tremendously if you have an emergency C-section. One could budget and plan for a natural delivery but sometimes circumstances warrant an emergency CS and you end up staying more nights in hospital = increased hospital fees, ObGyn visiting frequency & fees, paediatrician visiting frequency & fees.

There is also a Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin, which is a public hospital but has a private section within it. I had a C section with my second Child there. All the fees (prenatal visits and labour) worked out as 60K. I was a patent of Dr Mike Rogers at the time.

Thank you all for your replies! The last doc told me to look at having a scheduled C section because my placenta is looking low at the moment so its better to be prepared to pay more. Can anyone share the costs of doctor and anesthetist fees on Kowloon side? Hospitals like Union, baptist or St Theresas?
