Hi there,
I am in my early stages of pregnancy and I am looking for a new doctor. My last pregnancy ended in a late miscarriage and through this my doctor was not available for me. Yesterday I also had a scare and once again he was not available to even talk to.
I guess I just want someone I can trust and someone who is caring and a brilliant doctor.
I am fully covered and would prefer to have our baby at the matilda so would really appreciate any advise or recommendations.
Thanks so much.

wow that's terrible of your doctor to be so elusive during such hard times for you. can you let us know who he/she was so that us ladies out here are alerted?

i'd recommend dr dawkins whom i am with now (i'm expecting in april) but he is leaving HK in july this year. i can recommend dr philip ho, however, whom we also went to for fertility treatments. from our experience and everything we have about him, he is nothing if not trustworthy and responsible. his nurse kelly is also amazing and ALWAYS happy to talk to you or if necessary put you through to him. he delivers at matilda as well.

i hope everything goes well for you this time. i'm sure it will! take care.

Thanks so much Clowe for your advise.
I am so sorry to say it, but my doctor was Dr Dawkins, He is a great doctor but I guess I have lost my faith in him with regard to being there for me in an emergency, I also appreciate that he is a very busy man and sometimes these things do happen and I am sure your care under him is wonderful.
Good luck with your birth.

Hi Kylie,
I am with Dr christine Choy and would defintiely recommend her. It took me a little while to get used to her (the style of doctors here is just very different to the UK), but she is definitely a brilliant doctor and very supportive. She has just had a baby herself so I think that makes her even more empathetic. She is also a big advocate of natural childbirth if that is interesting to you. Since we fell pregnant she has taken a long time over our scans and shared in our excitement, and really got my husband involved. While I was having fertility treatment with her she also used to call me personally with any important test results etc, and always called me back if I tried to get hold of her.
The only problem I have with her is that she is expensive and I sometimes wonder if she's doing tests/selling me things I don't need, but I am more sensitive to this as we don't have insurance, so if you do I would say give her a try.
Sorry you've had a hard time, and I hope you find a doctor you're happy with soon.

i recommend Dr. Louisa Lam. She's very patient, return calls & spends as long as you wish to talk about your concerns (hence the long cue at her clinic, so i try to be the first appmt). 3 years ago, when i had my baby, i told her about natural birthing thru hypnosis & this was what she said, "well, my job is to make sure that you & the baby are both safe, as long as we can keep that part, i don't care what method you use. sure if you don't want an epi, but i suggest you keep your options opened just in case you change your mind at that moment."

she made sure i didn't go to one of the "rip-off" hospitals in town (very famous one, i don't want to name here). i also asked her to check my baby, cos i didn't have a choice for ped yet. when my baby was born (in matilda), i didn't want her to have that shot that will leave a scar on the arm, so she did the shot for my baby, and made sure it was "inside the bikini line" on the bump. when matilda asked to have my daughter's blood checked for jaundice, she came in on the 2nd day of chinese new year (i had my daughter the day before chinese new year) to made sure that my daughter was not jaundice hence no need to put the needle thru her heel. i also know that she did a test tube fertility treatment during the chinese new year holiday. and when she has patients' dure date around the holidays, she make sure she's in town.

it's a bit long here, but i really like her. =)

good luck!

Thanks so much ladies, i really appreciate your advise. I have actually seen Christine Choy and loved her but she is not prepared to deliver at the matilda which is a bummer and since I have the coverage I would much prefer the matilda over the adventist. I have to have a c-section for medical reasons so my stay is quite important to me. Adventist is not a bad hospital but during my stay when our baby was sick, I found it to be cramped and not that clean.
The great news is I have an appointment with Phillip Ho next week, he sounds wonderful, so fingers crossed he is the one.
Thanks for your recommdation for Dr Lam also, I now have lots of great positive doctors up my sleeve.
Cheers

Kylie,

Not to defend Dr. Dawkins, but I do know he was ill that day, and was also leaving out of town (I saw him that morning, and called later in the day and he was not there, but I was quickly referred to another Doctor for questions) Regardless, he is leaving this summer to return to Australia, so if you plan on having another, would be wise to seek out another OB anyway. I know I considered changing when I found this out, but being at 24 weeks, i figured I should just stay and change with the next baby. Hope you find someone who suits you well.

Hi Kylie,

I see you already have an appointement with Dr Phillip Ho, but thought I'd mention Dr Sally Ferguson as well. Since you really want to deliver at the Matidla she is a dr that delivers there. I have been going to her and found her to be really caring. She's at OT&P in Wan Chai.

Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy, hope everything goes well.

I would also like to mention Sally Ferguson. Actually more than mention Sally, she absolutely fantastic and completely contactable in my experience-even phoning me to make sure everything was OK and informing me of things. She's very caring and I wouldn't go to anyone else.

I hope everything goes well and good luck.

Kylie,

I am planning to approach Dr. Christine Choy as my obygn and am thining of delivering at Matilda. I am surprised to read that Dr. Christine Choy is not prepared to deliver at Matilda (as I heard that she has close connections with Matilda Hospital and I remember seeing Matilda on the list of hospitals she delivers baby in?). Is this an on off case (did she offer any explanations) or she really no longers delivers there?

Cheers

I can also HIGHLY recommend Dr. Phillip Ho!!!! ... and Kelly is an angel ;) He also works with an amazing team at the Matilda and you can tell they all think the world of him. If you have not already ... make sure you're booked in to the hospital!!!!!!!

Hi Josie,
Yes she def does not deliver at Matilda anymore. I even asked her again yesterday on the phone just to double check as I would of loved to stay with her as she seems fantastic. Her reasons being that she has had some patients that she could not deliver there due to shortage of beds so I think she got sick of it and pulled out. Best to call her and double check with her in case things change.

Kylie, thanks for the info. Best of luck with your pregnancy, no matter which obgyn you decide to stick with in the end :)

I can recommend Dr Ghosh, he delivered my third and has also delivered many of my friends. I find him a great Dr.

Like Noella, I can highly recommend Dr Ghosh. He lives at Matilda and always returns your call within 10 mins. I have had one emergency c-section and three miscarriages under him and he has always been there for me whatever time of day or night.

There is a shortage of beds everywhere so i find that a strange reason for dr choy not to deliver at the matilda. i think there might be more to it than that but also beleive that your doc is more important than your hospital but i can highly recommend Dr Ghosh.

My pregnancy was 'High Risk' and Dr Ghosh was recommended to by other HK Doctors. He was brilliant. I had 2 bleeds with my pregnancy, I paged Dr Ghosh on both occassions as they were out of office hours and he rang both times within 5 mins. I cannot recommend him enough. He was always a gentleman, always there for me and always reasuring throught my pregnancy. I took on board all of his advice and gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the end of it. GOOD LUCK!

My husband and I are not fans of Dr. Ghosh. Our first birth was an induction and we want to labor normally for our second child. Dr. Ghosh said there was no guarantee I would go into labor bc I had previously had an induction and my body didn't know "how to labor". I soon found out from other moms that

1) Dr. Ghosh is known for **his** preference for c-sections
2) Dr. Ghosh likes to schedule his deliveries back to back (hence a seemingly quick getaway to "give you privacy"), same with c-sections.
3) Dr. Ghosh makes patients wait for hours to see him.
4) Dr. Ghosh is condescending and an alarmist.
5) Dr. Ghosh sees labor and delivery as a nine-to-five job, just like his teaching. He wants You and your baby to fit into his schedule.
6) Dr. Ghosh recommends tests which are not necessary, often duplicating tests, costing more money for the patient. As he said " the tests are to protect himself in court".

Why worry about court if you are doing an excellent job?

These are just the facts.

californiamum-

sorry you don't like the guy, but i think it's awful how you've chosen to find older threads about ob recommendations to slam dr. ghosh.

he just delivered my breech baby via c-section, BUT was willing to deliver him vaginally up until the week before (the only one i know of who does in HK!). i was obsessed with having a drug-free birth and he encouraged me to try different positions to turn him, acupuncture, etc. unfortunately, my baby was in footling position with his right arm reaching over his back, even my midwife at annerley said a vaginal delivery was out of the question without serious risks.

i have friends that have used him for drug-free births with no problem. if you make your preferences clear at the start, which i did, your experience may have been different.

just saying. not everyone feels the way you do.
