Central Health paediatricians

Hello. Wondering if anyone has any feedback on the paediatricians at Central Health (Angela Lau/ Grace Poon/ Yvonne Ou/ Rulin Fuong). Got a baby on the way and would like to hear people's opinions to help me pick the right one for me/bub.

I've experienced Angela, Grace and Rulin. All of which were very professional and attentive to details. At Central Health, the pediatricians work as a team because they need to rotate to attend to hospitals. At times of urgency you may not be able to make a reservation with a specific doctor however I wouldn't be too worried. They have all the records thus its really a no brainer for them to attend to your baby.
 
I personally don't think that you need that kind of pediatrician unless you MUST see a specialist. Find a good family doctor/GP and take your whole family there instead. We have a local doctor (who also is a pediatrician, although she works as a GP) near our house in North Point who we've been fairly happy with. She's done all the kids immunisations and whenever they have any health issues (or if my husband and I do), we all go to her. We book an appointment and get in on time EVERY time, she only costs $200ish per consult INCLUDING medicine (if needed), plus I don't need to head into Central to see her. I never understood how people over here take their kids to pediatricians instead of to the local GP. Even back home in Australia, people will take them to the GP rather than a pediatrician most of the time (at least amongst my family/friends anyway). Pediatricians are specialists and they are to be seen if the problem is outside of a GP's realm of expertise.
 
i see yvonne ou, angela lau and roulin fong...they are experienced and when I have something major they are the ones i go too. the GP in area is nice, but unfortunately she does not have any pediatric training at all - so all vaccinations have to be done by my pediatrician (she says the veins are too small and not confident). other things like the cough / flu, she's fine. in fact, as long as i have the medication in stock at home - i think i am becoming more or less as pro as the local GP! :) it's mostly been fever management for me which i don't need a pedi for (or GP for that matter) unless it goes beyond 5 days.

the only complaint i would have is that the waiting time is way way too long - and the time you have with them (because they are so busy) is way too short - at least for their Central clinic - Yvonne at Repulse Bay is much better - she will actually give you 5mins of her time! YEAH - 5mins is a lot! :)
 
Thank you for your comments. I guess I'll just see whoever is available whenever baby needs a Dr.

Any idea if when baby is born I can request which one of them comes out to the hospital?
 
you can definitely request - make sure you let your pedi and OBGYN know in advance so that they can coordinate with the hospital
 
Just a note on cost. If you're using Central Health as your GP anyway, the paediatricians are not that much more expensive than the GP's per appointment so that's why most people just see the paediatrician for their children. Of course, there are cheaper GP's in HK, but I'm sure you know that already.

I see Angela Lau. She was present at the birth (LL was my Obs), so we've just carried on with her and I've got no complaints.
 
I also see Angela Lau and have no complaints. My daughter is 2 now and Angela has seen her since birth.
 
What do the GPs cost though? Most GPs in Hong Kong only charge around $200 per appointment. The ones that primarily serve expats though can charge whatever they want to charge, because often insurance will cover it anyway. If you have insurance that will cover that price, then sure go for it. But if you're paying for some or all of it, there are other options which are as good or better :)
 
Central Health GPs are around $750 I think and the paediatricians are around $850, so my point is that if you're going to Central Health anyway, you may as well see a Paed as a GP, because id you're spending $750, you may as well spend $850 and get a specialist.

However, as you and others have pointed out, there are far cheaper GP's in HK. Most people who go to Central Health are not self funding.
