Can anyone share their experience at Canossa Hospital. How is it compared with Adventist? Can anyone offer a cost breakdown of their delivery (preferrably for elective C-section) at Canossa?

For C-section, will I definitely require Epidural? Is there a special Epidural I should have for C-section?

I had a my baby via C section in Canossa 6 months ago. There is a 5 day package available for C section and prices vary according to what class of room that you stay in and whether it is elective or an emergency. You can get the price list from the hospital or download it from their website. I have friends who have had C Section at Adventist and the prices are pretty similar. You can get an epidural for a C section or go for general anaesthesia. Your OBGYN will probably talk to you about this closer to the due date. Hope this helps.
 
Thanks, Rani! That is a very useful link. I just don't hear enough about Canossa as most people seem to opt for Adventist or Matilda. But Canossa is so close to me so definitely a contender.

More information on Canossa from anyone is still very welcome!!

Dear mama cat, thanks for your reply. I do have prices on Canossa but in case of any hidden extras, can you please let me know a breakdown of your total cost at Canossa including doctors fee etc? Also, which OB did you use and is he/she any good and reasonably priced?

I'm still undecided about which hospital either but Canossa is on my list. I would love to hear more about anyone elses' experiences at Canossa.
 
Hi there... I had my baby at Cannossa (natural delivery/epidural) and will definately go back there for my next. The nurses are very attentive and listen to your needs, they encourage mothers to breast feed and give you lots of help on this. I opted for their package, it didnt include any hidden charges, in fact, the hospital bill was less than what we had anticipated. I stayed in a 3 bed ward, but was the only one in the room throughout my stay. You can ask for a guided tour of the maternity ward/labour rooms, which is what we did. If you need any more info, let me know.
 
Thanks Rosewood! It's great to know that they encourage breastfeeding as I've seen posts (from another website) saying that Canossa is not great for that.

Is it possible for you to give me a breakdown of your total bill at Canossa including Dr's fee etc.? Did you use the anaethetist at the hospital or did your doctor recommend one? Does your doctor charge more depending on room class and for C-section? Would you recommend your OB and is he/she expensive?

I am partially covered by insurance but i know it is simply not enough if I go private all the way. So am collecting info at this time to minimise cost. Just don't want to receive a shocking bill of 100K+ at the end. Rather save the money for junior's education :)

My husband had surgery at Canossa this summer.

The staff were all friendly...although a little too eager & overly helpful at times (especially as he was trying to recover & sleep).

They would wake him regarding meals & such, when he clearly told them he wanted to sleep & not be woken.

The hospital is fine, although very dated.

What annoyed & worried me was that on 2-3 occasions I had to remind the nurses to put on gloves when handling/drawing my husbands blood. And then toss the bloody banges in our sink without bothering to properly throw them away.

Hard to believe in this day and age that nurses would fail to do that.
They did however ALWAYS have a mask on...as if airborn diseases were the only thing that could affect them. ...gezz

Also the bathroom was teeny tiny & badly needed renovation. My husband is 6'3 and I had to help him get to the bathroom, but could hardly fit in there with him.
He could'nt even take a shower becuase the shower head only went as high as his chest. And the tub was 1/2 the size of a normal one. Shameful for a hospital.

They did'nt even provide a bar / liquid soap in the bathroom to wash hands...although it clearly states to wash hands on the back of the door.-ha! I asked for some & got it, but after they cleaned the room the following day they took it away.

No suitable sleeping area for spouse. Had to pull two chairs together & bring my own pillow.

And getting food for me, the wife (a simple piece of toast) was always followed by the comment "oh you know that you'l have to pay for that, right?"
Good Lord...it's toast...I think I can afford it.

And is it just me or does Canossa smell like a combo of brocolli & urine?...haha Sorry, but it does.
Most hospitals I've been to smell like disinfectant. I never once saw any cleaning personel Canossa.

I'm 7 wks pregnant, and def. won't be having mine at Canossa after that experience. Just my personal choice. I'm sure others have had good experiences there.
 
Baby number 2 is in planning stages and I have a couple of questions also about Canossa!
Was your husband/partner allowed in the labour and delivery room? I've heard some hospitals don't allow spouses in in the labour room and I just couldn't imagine that! Also are they allowed to overnight in the hospital with you? And last .. do babies room in with mom or are they in a nursery?

My experiences at Canossa were pretty good. The nurses were very attentive and supportive esp when i was in labour. They are also very helpful in getting the breastfeeding going. There were no hidden costs in the final bill, just what the package rate quoted. The rooms were quite big and modern (they were recently renovated). I had a 2 person room all to myself during my 5 day stay. I recently visited a friend at the Adventist and found that the similar class room is smaller. Husband/partners are allowed in the labour and delivery room as well as the operation theatre. Babies are only allowed to room in in the first class (single) rooms but they bring in the babies during feeding times for the other rooms.

Sunny - in terms of doctor's fees, I think the average is around 30-50k for c section. Bear in mind that when the doctor visits you at the hospital they charge the equivalent of your room rate, so if your room rate is say $1250, they charge that as their visiting fee. The doctor usually recommends the anaethetist. My OGBYN is in causeway bay. She is quite local and usually uses Canossa or the HK Sanatorium.
 
We used the package, and I was charged 4.5 days for a 3 bed ward. My overall hospital bill was around 54K, including doctors fee (which I think was around 22-25K, cant remember exact cost), anesthesialogist fee (around $7500 - note, the hospital also charges a a separate fee for epidural ), paedatrician fee $700 per day, had 4 visits). Both the Anesthesialogist and Paedatrician were recommended by my doctor. Food, toiletries, sanitary pads were included, I guess thats because I chose the package. The bathrooms/toilets were of an ok size in the maternity ward, and there were always cleaning ladies around.

Husbands/patners are allowed in the labour room - one downside is that they only get a hard chair to sit on in the labour room, unlike in Adventis where I think they provde a more comfy chair, the ones with the high padded backrest. So if you're in for a long overnight labour, like I was, its a bit uncomfortable for the hubby.

We did take a tour of the maternity wards at Adventis as well, which did look nicer and more welcoming than Canossa, but in the end we opted for Canossa because it was closer.
 
Hello

I went to the Canossa but just as an outpatient. It seemed modern enough
and very clean. It is an old-fashioned type of hospital. I have worked in hospitals for years -the fabric of the building is not what ,atters (though space is nice!) but rather the management of your case and the equipment and most of all the consultants.
Someone commented about the room sizes and that in certain rooms your baby is not left with you, after birth but brought in for feeding?
This is archaic and I would not be happy with this, at all.
Bonding occure in the early stages. THe baby should be put to your breast after you deliver and should not be removed. You should be able to pop the baby in by your side whenever you want and breastfeeding should be actively encouraged (though it is, of course, the mother's determination to see this works, but a bit of encouragement helps!)

Has anyone used the prenatal check up package at Canossa? I'm just wondering whether they assigned you one ob/gyn throughout or you saw a different doc each time. Thank you.
 
Hi Rosewood, thank you for all the information, this is very detailed. I am also thinking of choosing Canossa due to its proximity. I was wondering if you can provide more details as to the choices of doctors who will be able to deliver in Canossa. Did you get to choose and who did you choose?
 
I'm not a big fan of Canossa....I've spent several nights in Canossa, Adventist, Matilda and Queen Mary and out of all those the Canossa was the worst. I think personally I'd rather be in the Queen Mary than the Canossa.

The Canossa is old....the rooms are dull and miserable. The bathrooms, and the rooms themselves desperately need renovation....

I've actually ended up in the Canossa twice (when other hospitals were full) and both times I found the nurses to be partic. unfriendly.

I would go anywhere but Canossa.

I complaint their ridiculous charge and ended up no reply from their customer services manager.

My little one went to the hospital when she was 5 days old, and they put her into a cot which was right next to a toddler who had fever. My pediatrician agreed to change cot for my baby which was a bit further from the fever child the next day, so we helped the nurse to do the move. During the move, the nurse told us they had to charge us for the move, I can't remember how much but I insisted not to pay. So the nurse passed our case to their CS dept and manager came down and asked me details but no reply at the end, of course the charge was listed on the bill.

If I have choice, I definitely won't go back there.
