Can you take ready made formula on planes?

I'm just wondering if anyone has taken on board ready made formula since the new restrictions have been in place.

We will be travelling to the UK on British Airways and would only need 3 feeds. Do they allow it?

Thank You!

I am in a similar situation. I guess I will take powder and mix it on board. One thing is where to get the hot water. I was wondering if we'd be able to take a flask and ask the cafes, etc. (once we pass customs) for boiling water and then mix that with bought distilled water on the plane.

Hi Sky, It's hard to know what to do isn't it? I'm just worried that all the cafes and shops will be closed as our flight is so late. They should have bottled water on the plane though I hope. When are you flying? Luckily my 15 month old only has a few milk feeds a day now but I'm really relying on the milk to settle him off after we board.

Thanks.

Actually come to think of it I am on a very early flight. Can't remember if its 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. hope the cafes are open. I shall be flying to UK on 31st May. My baby is 9 months, hopefully we will get by with only a few feeds too as he is eating mushy food now. I'll have to get some baby food ( and raw fruit) ready.

Why don't you just take a bottle of evian with you? if they confiscate (which I can't imagine they would), the plane can supply bottled water.

This may not be what you would use at home, but for the sake of a couple of feeds it will be fine, and it's not as though your babies are newborns any longer so their digestive systems are more mature.

Plus, if you are only carrying the powder (rather than pre-made), takes less space and weight in your hand luggage!

This is what I have done in the past.

Thing is baby is used to warm milk. Maybe will have to give him room temp milk if can't get any boiling water.

you could use some boiling water from the flight and add to evian water to make the baby's bottle the right temp, won't hurt for a couple of feeds.

I read about that too, infact, there might have been a thread on here. I did this once with my eldest and it was definitely boiled as it was a lot hotter than even our boiled water at home straight from the kettle. I'm much more cautious now though.

Airplane restrictions

Hi..

I have dealt with this situation as well. I had bottles of prepared formula confiscated at security in the US, and I have had unopened, sealed water confiscated even with a baby in my arms.

What I have been able to get through are the sealed cans of prepared formula,(are these available in HK?) and of course the powder mixes. I have had luck both with coffee places giving me warm water, and just using lukewarm water on the planes.

My daughter has also been okay with water from a bottle. After about 12 months, it seemed she was comforted more by the bottle than what was in it. You might also try the UHT milk in small sealed containers if your child can have that yet. I have never had a problem bringing baby food on board either.

Good luck and happy travels!

I've flown from HK a few times with ready made formula since they increased the restrictions without any problem. I have not flown in/out of the US though. I have had no problem in Singapore or London either. In Zurich, I was told that we were carrying too much for the short flight (1.5 hours) but they still let me take it, just with a warning not to do it again. Hopefully you should be OK. Bon voyage!

Just came back from a trip to NY with a 3 mths old baby. I took on board the ready made formula in 200ml cartons from Bumps to Babes. I had no problems at either end. They did not even check my bags. They just asked if I had liquids and I said ready made formula for babies and they just let me thru. Baby drank the milk with no fuss. I did feed him an occasional carton every day for a few days leading up to our travel to make sure he didn't mind it.

think it really depends on the airport. When flew to Manila from HK two weeks ago, I brought a flask of hot water and bottle of distilled. Went through security check with no problem. From Manila back to HK, no one cared to check our bags so we didn't even need to explain what the liquid's for.

As to hot water on planes, frankly I wouldn't try.

Re hot water, during the Manila trip, I found that parents there don't use hot water at all due to hot weather so I just fixed my baby room temperature milk and he seemed to enjoy it so when we returned home we continue to mix formula without using hot water. The formula dissolve without problem though need to shake it a bit longer.

You can take powder and get them to warm up the evian water for you.
I've mixed the powder and the bottled water, then asked the hostie to warm it up for me. They can easily do it the old fashioned way by sitting the whole bottle in a container of hot water.
Just give them a bit of extra time as they are busy and it has taken me up to 10 mins to get it back.

Pre mixed formulas and all baby foods, are exempt from the no liquid rules, but you must have the baby with you when you go through x-ray.

Here are complete details for the HK airport authority http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/tbu/security.htm#nav_3_3

Bumps to babes sells the Cow and Gate 2 plus. It's meant for hungrier babies from birth. The whey and caesin ratio is slightly different, more caesin dominant which is digested slower. I tried it a few times whilst at home and he didn't notice a difference.
He drank it in room temperature. I am lucky in that he doesn't mind if his milk is heated or not. It was so convenient, just poured from carton to bottle and fed. I didn't need to ask the air hostess for anything. Sometimes they are so busy and it takes them a while to get back to you.
