I loved my ergo insert in winter, I used it until bubs was about 4 months old, just make sure bubba isn't over-dressed, it's very thick like a quilt and on top of that you are providing your body heat. I think the head support is fine, but take time to learn how to use it, I found the leg positioning a bit confusing.
