hi,

Im just in my first trimester, and feel like i'm coming down with a cold and sore throat. After reading all the books on pregnancy and maternity, I'm worried about even sucking on a throat lozenger. Should I get any worse do I see a normal GP or do I go to my OBGyne for treatment?

thanks

i have suffered with a couple of colds during my pregnancy... i went to the pharmacist at watson's...told him i was pregnant and asked what was ok to take...

he said...lozenges for a sore throat
mentholatum rub for my congested chest
and nasal spray if i was suffering from stuffy nose(although he did warn me not to take more of this than was recommended)

you do not go to see an OBGYN for a cold.. they are trained for women's medicine... there's nothing special about a cold, if the cold continues for weeks on end, then go see a GP...however, all you usually need to do with a cold is lots of rest and vitamin C.

you do not take antibiotics for a cold (they fight bacteria and colds are viruses)

If you have a cold with a fever go to your doctor as soon as possible. If you don't have a fever and are worried about going into the consulting room then call your doctor for his or her advice. As for buying over-the-counter preparations, my GP told me to always call him first - nice guy eh!

Sick when pregnant

I caught bronchitis when I was 9 months pregnant. I went to my GP and she gave me medicine that was not contraindicated for pregnant or nursing mothers. I am glad I did, because imagine trying to push out a baby when you can't breathe deeply.

I was still taking the meds (a course of antibiotics) when I gave birth.

I too had a simple cold turn into bronchitis when I was pregnant and it was not ideal - my fault for not going to my doctor earlier!

my pharmist told me the regular tylenol for the fever and Robitussin/DM for coughs are safe for pregnant woman.
