Burping baby

baby refused to be burped at around 3 months -- would arch his back and cry... so if he's asleep we had to hold him (head above chest) for around 10 minutes to make sure he doesn't choke in case he spit milk. And if he's awake, we'd just keep him in a sitting position and he'd burp on his own. Now he's 6 months, and we don't have to do anything.
 
I'm still burping mine at 8 months - sometimes he burps on his own, if not, we burp him. When he doesn't burp, we sit him upright for 10mins too, however, we noticed that he sometimes burps and brings milk up after he wakes up from his sleep or starts flipping and crawling.
