Hi everyone

I have been using white rice until now,but recently i read that Brown rice has more fibre, and its more healthier.I still have to find the right recipe to cook it though. Also i would want to know which is the best quality if i have to buy, coz i have heard that its very hard to chew.

Any recipes and any preferences on the quality????

:thanks in advance,

God bless:flower:

I assume it's for your baby and not for you!

I've always used organic brown rice, usually from Green Dot Dot. As a first food, I blended it raw into a fine powder and cooked in plenty of water to make a perfect baby porridge/congee. As baby gets older, you blend it less and, by about 12 months, not at all. You can also add in other grains such as millet and barley for variety. These are the instructions in Ruth Yaron's book 'Super Baby Food' which I highly recommend.

HTH!

I use brown rice mixed with white rice ? the only difference is when cooking it put a bit more water in as brown rice takes longer to cook as so uses more water.

The reason that I mix the two rices together is because my children won?t eat 100% brown rice. They start to complain when I get up to the 50% mark. So generally I have two portions of white rice for one of brown rice.

Just on that note. I have only ever given my two (nearly six and two and a half) brown rice, pasta, bread etc. Some friends have asked me how I get them to eat it, but I believe it's simple. If you only ever give them the good stuff, they never know the difference. I'm waiting for the day when my daughter notices the white bread and packaged foods some of the other kids take to school, but so far so good.
Good luck with the rice.

i have read too its good.is it the one way we get from parknshop, from thailand?
i give my 3yr old basmati rice.his homeo doc said its good and no white rice.

We're also doing the mixed rice bit, started out with 25% brown to 75% white, slowly adjust till we are now 75% brown to 25% white. At first my son would not eat the brown rice, but since the slow incorporation, he's adapted to it. I think if you slowly incorporate it to your diet, then your chance of success would be greater than an abrupt change.

basmati is less processed...?
hmm...i think i shud do the mixing thing too.
Do we cook them seperately?

soak the rice (and all grains and pulses)

Rice and all grains contain phytic acid, which prevents the nourishing stuff being digested; apparently not soaking rice is a contributing factor to starvation in Africa (I am not starting a political debate). It is much better to soak all grains and pulses. Another side effect from not soaking beans can be seen with excess flatulence! The trick is to soak them overnight in water, if you are extra keen you can then cook the rice slowly (2 hours) with seaweed, whey or meat stock. By soaking and cooking with flavours it should make the rice far more palletable for kids. There's loads of stuff on the internet if you are interested. I find frying off the brown rice after soaking and cooking makes it more palletable for my 16 month old daughter. I know it seems a lot of effort but worth a try.
