Breastfeeding+formula, or cow`s milk?

Hello,
I need advice on milk dosage, anyone who had similar experience,
please give your opinions.
I`ve been exclusively breastfeeding my son for 12 months, started solids from 6 months.
I`m planning to brestfeed him as long as can, till 18-20 months,if he will take my milk for so long.
My question is do I need to give him some formula or he can try cow`s milk already?``No worries about milk allergy in the family``
Does he really need formula or breastmilk alone is enough?and cow`s milk just to add different flavour to his diet.``I breastfeed 4 to 6 times a day,he probably gets approximately 80-120 ml,per feed, depends on the time of a day.
All opinions are welcome, thanks in advance.

Yes I know cow`s milk should be fine,he just turned 1 year,3 days ago,but just thinking about extra vitamins or whatever they say``dr`s and other specialists``that formula has.Is my milk enough?Everyone around me so judgemental, about the fact that I`m still breastfeeding and planning on doing it for longer time.So its hard not doubt yourself sometimes,if my son is getting everything he needs from me,or is there something else in formula milk.

all sales hype as far as i'm concerned.

not judging you in any way, but it sounds to me like your son is maybe not getting enough other stuff. his nutrition should now be coming from solids. he should be eating everything that an adult eats, just in smaller quantities. milk for a 1 year old is NOT his main form of nutrition. it sounds like he's getting an awful lot of milk (but my kids are 3 & 5, so not been on milk for a long time.)

Oh no,I was talking about some of the people that are close to me and making faces about breastfeeding.
As for the solids,he eats almost everything, just not in the past 2 months,he`s been teething constantly and his appetite is quite weak, compare to 6 to 10 months, which is when he ate all kinds of baby foods, slowly moving onto adult foods``smaller portions of course``but from 10 months till this moment,he`s in a lot of pain in his gums,so chewing is not his favorite thing at the moment,I think if I didn`t breastfeed him, these months,he wouldn`t put on weight. Thanks to mommy`s milk.
Thanks for reply.

Breastfeeding and cow's milk after 1 is fine, but still breastfeeding 4-6 times a day seems a lot. By 10 months my little one was only taking milk three times a day and now that he is 14 months, me pediatrician recommends 2 milk feedings a day and three solids with maybe a snack in the afternoon.

Formula has nothing extra that you need. Your BM and healthy solid food is totally fine. Add in cows milk as and when you want.

you can try breastfeed + solid and include cow's milk in the recipe. breastmilk is the best for your child. don't give up.!

My paed recommended that my LO drink not more than 500 ml of milk per day once he turned one. I've seen similar info on websites which say not to let your LO drink too much milk instead of solid food (eg, meat, tofu) due to the possiblity of iron deficiency. I don't think there is any reason to change to formula, but you should make sure your baby is getting enough iron from food.

Maybe contact La Leche League for more guidance. Breastmilk should be enough for the milk along with his solids. From my understanding, he should be breastfeeding much less when you've introduced solids.

Please remember that breastfeeding is not just supplying your baby with milk but also with many immune factors and antibodies. This immune side of breastfeeding does not reduce as time goes on - if anything it the immune factors and antibodies increase as your baby takes less milk each day. So please don't feel pressurized into stopping breastfeeding before you are ready.

La Leche League is a very good place to get support for breastfeeding older babies. Everyone is keen to approve of a mother breastfeeding her newborn but for some reason this approval seems to weaken as the baby grows older. LLL supports mothers with breastfeeding no matter what the age of the baby.

Our next meeting is at Starbucks in Alexandra House, Central on Tuesday morning you are very welcome to join us.

Details of all our meetings are available at LLL-HK Meetings for our English speaking meetings and LLL-HK 會議日程 for our Chinese speaking meetings.

Best wishes,
SARAH
