breast feeding and stomach problems

Hi -

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is any link between breast feeding and stomach aches. I"ve never experienced this before, but it appears that every time I finish breast feeding, I get a stomach ache that lasts for at least 30-45mins after which it disappears. Does anyone know if there is in fact a link or is it all psychological? Also, if anyone else has had a similar thing happen to them - if so, what did / can you do about it? I just sit and wait it out...not really very helpful!

How old is your baby? If newborn, it may be because the hormones are triggering the uterus to contract. I had something similar with my second...

Have you recently delivered? The hormones released in breastfeeding do act on the uterus to help it contract after birth. This can be painful. I found that I had these pains in the first month or two after delivery, but not much longer than that... And more so after my 2nd child.

If it's not in the first 2 months though, I don't know what it would be!!

thanks guys - knew i could count on this forum for help! Yeah - my baby is 3weeks old but I don't remember the same thing happening for my 1st and 2nd babies...funny how fast one forgets the painful things so fast! (well with me at least!) :)

Yup experienced the same while expressing, the bright spot is that you know your uterus is contracting and you will be back in shape in no time :)

They're called afterpains and they do increase in intensity the more children you have so it's possible you didn't feel them the first time round.

thanks jvn....just had my 3rd so they are most likely more pronounced as you say. my husband wanted to send me to the doctors! :)

Hi,

I do have similar issue. Stomach ache occur sometimes during feeding. Always need to run to toilet right after feeding. What I did was rubbing some "po sum on medicated oil" on my belly button. It works for me. My mom said is because of "wind".

really? "wind" then should we be eating more ginger?!? Haven't had ginger with rice for a long time as it gives me pimples... what do you think?

Hmmm, I am not sure. However, I noticed my belly button was protruded towards the end of my pregnancy, and ever since then I get stomach ache pretty often.

hmmm...If you don't like to consume ginger, you may boil ginger water and bath. Another option is my mom will boil lemon grass with chicken soup. This is very good to get ride of 'wind' too.

thanks mavislohsp will try the lemon grass with chicken soup and see if that helps. the pains get pretty bad, especially if my baby feeds a long time (40mins), but at least it is "normal" so I know i'm not suffering from something weird!
