Birthday party planning/timing? Pls advise!

Hi,

I'm planning to have a birthday party for my girl's 3rd birthday...just wondering if anyone can tell me about how they organized their young child's birthday parties? Esp. the time of day, food and "order of events."

Ideally I'd have it Sat. 3-5 p.m., so I could just provide snacks. But due to some other plans I have I might have to do it Sat. around lunchtime, 11:30-1 or something like this.

In case lunch is also provided, how should the time be ordered? Have lunch, then "activities" then cake? What type of activities? I'd like to organize it myself without hiring outside entertainers. Also what type of food ?

Would greatly appreciate hearing other parents' experience with this! Suggestions welcome too...

I only have an experience to share, not suggestion. But I hope it helps.

We have just been to a 2nd birthday party that was an outdoor, 12 - 3 p.m. We got there shortly after 12, and the foods were already set up on a buffet table. Though there were only 3 guests there, the parents asked us to start helping ourselves with the foods right away. Apart from snacks like cheese nachos and pretzels, there were a couple different toppings of pizza, spring rolls, samosas, cold macaroni salad, bite-size sandwiches, cocktail sausages, fruit salad, fruit slices, brownies and cookies. They were more than enough for lunch. We played one game (pass the parcel) at about 1:30. I think all the guests were there by then. Cake cutting was shortly after 2. I was talking to the birthday girls' mom at that time, and remember her saying that "Everybody has eaten, now let's have the birthday cake." And in fact, the cake was part of the dessert.

All went well and guests started leaving by 2:30 or so.
 
We got Mad Science to conduct our birthday party for our child who just turned 5. They did a great job and it was educational as well as entertaining. However, they don't do any coordination, just the show and the workshop. They have classes too - My daughter absolutely loves it. Their website is www.madscience.com.hk
 
3rd birthday

I think we had it in the afternoons (2pm-4pm-ish)

The schedule went something like this:

1) Arrival & free play (~30 minutes)
2) Craft (I got white paper bags and colored pens and sitckers etc. the kids made their own "goodie bag"). ~ 15-20 minutes.
3) Games - pass the parcel - w/ each layer taken off, each kid got a piece of candy and could put it in her or his goodie bag.
- pass the hat (like the parcel, execpt a hat goes around, if you get stuck w/ the hat, you're out, but you get a piece of candy. Winner gets 2 pieces.
- Simon Says (kid gets out - 1 goodie, winner gets 2).
the games lasted about 30 minutes
4) Cake Ceremony - candles & cake & song. eat the cake. ~ 15 minutes
5) Free play & then time to go home

If people bring gifts DO NOT OPEN THEM AT THE PARTY. With preschoolers this is almost guaranteed to end in chaos and tears.

Hi, Does anyone know where I can get a birthday cake made in Discovery Bay?
I would like to get it made for my 2 years old son and having a party by the end of the month.

Also, any stores sells the birthday supplies? Any suggestions?

she has year old twin boys though, so she needs some time to prepare the cakes, i don't think she can do anything last minute...

Moms,

I have received quite a few birthday invitations which say "No Nannies/Helpers" please. For working Moms, its understandable that the helpers will bring the kids, but I've noticed quite a few SAHM are also sending the kids w/helpers. What do you think should be the right Birthday Party Etiquette?
