Birth registration - daily quota?

Hi, I just tried to book online for the birth registration for our baby born Jan 6th and it is so fully booked that we cannot get in until late Feb this will put us past 42 days.

Has anyone done the walk in to register what is the likelihood of getting in on the walkin quota?

I would like to avoid the $140 fee(post 42 days) and get the BC so that we can start arranging a passport.

Thanks very much

My husband's just gone in first thing in the morning with all the necessary documents and never had a problem We've had 2 children in HK.

At Queensway, a queue of people starts forming outside the registry early (about 8:15 or 8:30) and the registry staff come down and distribute queue numbers at about 8:45am. If you go early, you should have no problem.

My husband went to Queensway about 15 min before it opened and got in around number 12 or so (can't remember exactly)...

Living in Sai Kung you will be best to go to Shatin.
We did this recently and it was no problem. We didn't get there super early and were one of the last before the quota was full.
The earlier you get there the less likely you will not make the quota.

I don't think you can just go to any registry office.

It all depends on where you delivered as the hospital forwards the documents to it's designated registry office.

Thanks all for your replies, yes we went to Shatin arrived before it was open and were home before lunch.

However.... big surprise as they don't print the "family name" on the birth certificate, how weird is that?! Hubby tried to question it and was told in no uncertain terms this is standard procedure.

We have no issue with it but NZ Passport office were somewhat perplexed when I rang them to discuss passports.... I can't help but think this may cause a few challenges in the future.

Not sure if its the same with the kiwi embassy but we took are daughters hk birth certificate and my passport (i think) to the british consulate and they produced a UK birth certificate for us (although stating she was born in HK). It cost about HK$2000, so not cheap but we had the same concerns and thought it would avoid any confusion in the future.

They definitely don't print the family name on the birth certificate, which I find really, really strange. However, when we applied for Aussie citizenship and passport there were no problems at the consulate. I'm not sure if we'll encounter any probs in future, but at least the citizenship certificate and passport have our children's full names.

ha, I hadn't noticed!

I just checked ours, and in the Name section it just has baby's first and middle name (if given). However, two boxes under it has Surname and Name of Father and then Maiden Surname and Name of Mother. So the family surname is listed on the birth certificate, it's just not in the box where it's asking for baby's name.

If you want your baby's surname on the birth certificate, the ONLY way to get it is to get a 'shortened' birth certificate, which is only available from the Admiralty office.

DS has a different surname from both DH and myself (traditional naming custom in DH's family) but the Aus embassy refused to accept his legally registered name from the standard birth cert, because it didn't appear on the cert. The HK registry will not put the surname on the standard certificate at all. It's not 'standard formating'. :eyesroll:

The embassy should be pretty used to HK birth certificates, and if your baby has either your husband's or your name, then it's pretty straight forward.
