Beware - Dishonest Recommendations

Hi,
I thought it was worth posting this warning about dishonest users of this site. I have written a couple of posts asking about baby sitters, helpers etc and each time I have received replies from unscrupulous people who claim to be expats recommending their old helper or sitter. It is obvious from the replies (which are generally via PM) that the person replying is not an expat from the jurisdiction they claim to be from. It doesn't help that they claim to be natives of different countries at different times!

Anyway, a word of warning - before you accept a recommendation from a user just speak to them first to ensure that they are genuine. I am sure lots of you would do this anyway!!

Finally, I should make it clear that I have also had some great recommendations from genuine people via this forum and I think that this is site is invaluable.

Hi Sherwes, If you PM the names of the people who have contacted you. We'll take care of it.

same experiences!

i've been meaning to send outa post regarding this issue too. i do agree with sherwe en i had the same experiences as well.

we make a posting at a moment when we do need help and support. i think it is a shame that someone is mis-using the trust in times of desperation.

Like I've said earlier.. the more feedback we get about these users, the more we can do to identify such abuses.

On GeoExpat users proactively take part in the moderation and reporting (click on the "!" link to report a bad post / public recommendation / suspicious post / commercial spam) - which allows us to then investigate.

Do it here and I can assure you it will be investigated.

Have gotten a PM from someone today and am going to look into it.

To the person who PMed me .. sorted. You're right, I have strong reasons to suspect that this person was pretending to be an employer and has indeed gone board with their recommendations.

I think a lot of the time it's obvious but we should all report it when we see it.

It's not limited to helper recommendations etc but hairdressers, schools, etc. You can generally tell that someone is a phony when they have only posted one or two times and then weigh in with a big recommendation for something. Annoying really.
