bday on beach - bad idea?

my bub's second bday is in mid-june and i'm toying with the ideas of sorting out a bday party. i'm thinking about doing a beach party (with bbq ofcourse) but is it a bad idea since it will be too hot to celebrate properly?

most will be adults with 2-3 kids so think the party will be more for us than the kids (>.<).

if anyone has done beach bday then please pass some tips on how to remain cool. we went to a bbq spot in gold coast earlier this year and it had shades so it wasn't that bad but that was in march so not sure how we'll manage to handle the bbq in june......
 
We have never thrown a beach party ourselves, but some of our friends have here (weather is the same as HK) and to be honest, as soon as I hear beach I decline the invitation. Personally, spending an hour at the playground is one thing, but more than an hour in 90 degree weather w/out an option of cooling off anywhere in an air conditioned space is not ideal for my now 3 year old son and to be honest, myself too. I think beach parties are really hard even if there is shade b/c it's still sooooo hot and kids over heat so easily.

If you are still going forward with it maybe do a breakfast beach party at 9am or late in the afternoon at around 5pm for a bday dinner.
 
we have been to a couple of birthday parties on beach but not combined with bbq. standalone - they are fun. but they are usually early in morn or late in noon depending on the weather.
 
Beach parties are fun. Our guy's birthday is in June, and the weather is too unpredictable. We've always done his party indoors cos of rain.
 
yes i did think of the hot/unpredictable weather - thanks for the replies! time to venture out to other (indoor) options :)
 
If you do decide to go with beach party, i really recommend turtle cove beach in tai tam. the bbq area is shaded by lots of trees. it's a relatively smaller beach, but it is never crowded due to the fact that it is a bit more out of the way. i see families bring young babies there all the time. the water is really clean and the sand is soft.

It's at the lip of Redhill Peninsula in Tai Tam. If taking a bus (or taxi), get off at Redhill Plaza and there is a staircase off to the side from the bus stop which leads down to the beach (on Tai Tam Road). The staircase is not very prominent, but it shouldn't be too difficult to locate.
 
The staircase is actually on Tai Tam Road (the main road) just a few steps away from the bus stop. You don't need to go into Redhill to access it. That's the best I can explain it!
 
Turtle Cove is a nice small beach... but the flight of steps is long. With small kids and birthday stuff to carry it's not my fav place to go. but it's quite popular for cozy private parties.

we quite like chung hom kok. it's easier to access from the road. is quite (by hk standards), clean and green. it's near stanley for any emergency shopping. and it's got a big kids playground.

This made me smile..For most kids (and parents) the beach is a great place to be during the summer as it gives you the opportunity to stay cool. The water is refreshing and if for some reason you dont like seawater you can always get hosed down in one of the showers nearby. Is aircon really necessary? When else would you go to the beach? Winter?

For the OP, I would suggest finding a beach that will not only cater for the kids but also adults in the crowd. It will make for a much nicer time. With that, I'm referring to beaches that have a bar/restaurant close by so the adults can sit and relax while the kids can play within a very close sight distance.
eg: avoid Repulse bay but look at StStephens Beach, PuiO, CheughSha and similar.

Obviously it's a personal choice for each family. If the family/birthday child loves the beach than it's a no brainer! :) We definitely prefer to have parties, indoor and with air conditioning! Sitting in heat and sweating whether in the shade or not, is not our ideal of fun. Perhaps this is just the New Yorker in me!
 
I agree it's a personal choice. We live close to the beach but would only go late in afternoon when there is shade. I was there at 10am recently and it wa so hot that after a dip in the sea, I got hot again before I reached our beach mat. Though I've seen families happy hanging out baking all day.
