BCG vaccine-- pediatrician recommendations

Hi, am delivering my second child at QMH and have just indicated I would prefer not to have the BCG injection done here as it would have to be done on the arm, instead of the leg which I would very much prefer. Any recommendations on PDs who give such vaccines? I live in happy valley and would prefer to see someone nearby. Thanks!! :)

i think most gp's will do it if they have it in stock, so if you have a regular gp, just call and ask. fyi, if you're in/near central, i went to Ada Li for both my girls. She had it in the surgery both times, no problem. She's on Queens Rd (the building next to H & M, on the escalator side).

That's lane Crawford house or they might have changed it to Crawford house.

Thanks all!! Just got home yesterday and rang our gp in happy valley. He has the vaccine so we will be heading there for the jab soon. ;)

I've heard some doctors don't like to do it on the leg because of the proximity to the diaper and sometimes can get infected. It's not that bad, the scar that is. You can barely see my daughter's now and she's not quite 2.

I think the scar varies by person - I have seen some almost invisible ones and some fairly obvious ones. Just depends on how your body heals and how lucky/careful you are not to knock the scab off. Our daughter had hers in the arm, and it took a long time to heal - over 6 months.

Found this PDF on Irish national health site with some more info

Scar Position
Site is just above deltoid crease on left arm
- right arm used for revaccination
Too high ? more likely to cause keloid formation
Not given in leg ? some reasons:
1. Manufacturers recommend arm ? trials on arm only
2. Nappy area
3. Primary immunisations given in leg [3 month delay would be
needed]
4. Difficulty in checking for scars at a later age
5. Possible increase in regional lymphadenitis if given in l leg

My son and eldest daughter got it on their bottom..the middle one on her arm as they did it without my knowledge...lucky for her the scar is not that obvious. We did make sure to keep it very clean and not let it get infected to ensure the scarring was minimal...think it has helped she's 18mths and you barely see it.

Didn't manage to get the BCG on my bb's inner thigh after all... GP's nurse made a mistake, there was no stock. In the end, doc referred me to hk sanitorium. The doc there refused to do it on her thigh, stating there is higher chance of infection and in the end, had it on her arm and gotta pay 450 for it. Oh well...
