Baby's Mouth Hygiene

I have been BFing baby for 3 months, but have never cleaned her mouth. I had been advised not to do so by a lactation consultant, but now she has a sour milk smell in her mouth and her tongue is furry with residue.

Should we be cleaning out baby's mouth, and how do I do this?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

I think perhaps the reason she wants you to clean the baby's mouth is probably because she is worried about thrush? Is the furry residue white? I never cleaned my baby's mouth but then again, I BF but pumped pretty much exclusively for my DD.

Yes I do...

I do clean my 3 month old baby's mouth. I breastfeed exclusively, and yes she's got white stuff on her tongue. I use cotton cloth or baby handkerchief and boiled water. I wrap the cotton on my pointer, dip it in the water then gently rub her gums and tongue. I hope this helps!:crib

lagu-lagu,
thanks for the tip - i might give it a try since the residue is a bit furry.

mintycat,
i was worried it was thrush, but her doctor says it isnt, so i think it is just furry tongue from the bf milk residue?

thanks again for the replies. :)
