baby wont take my breast

Hi Solidstars - I use a pacifier for my baby who loves to suck for comfort at nap time and sleep time.... I love them, if she's getting tired, she calms right down and drops off to snooze wherever we are its great!! Just to mention we tried 2 different types before she found one she really liked.

i, personally, would rather my kids use a pacifier than their fingers or thumb. eventually you can throw a pacifier away. it is much easier to get rid of it than it is to teach kids not to suck their thumb.

i don't advocate "pushing" it on him. he is very young still and doesn't quite know what to do with this strange nipple that doesn't produce milk. trying it a few times over the course of a few weeks isn't pushing it.

i wasn't taking it personally... just expressing my own opinion, just as you were... i'm sorry that you took it personally.

i've seen so many kids with sores on their thumbs, parents almost to the point of pulling their hair out because they can't get their child to stop sucking the thumb. PERSONALLY, i found it easier to take a pacifier away than try to get someone to stop sucking their thumb.

now, when your child is as small as it is, it doesn't present much of a problem... in 18-36 months' time, that may not be the case.

of course, you are free to do as you choose and what works for your family. (do i need to write that caveat at the end of every post?)
(now, of course, i took the last post personally, as it was directed at me... personally)

sorry, i can't edit that last post... please ignore it... i'm not in a great mood today, don't want to take it out on you.

sorry.

thanks everyone! all comments useful and i'll keep trying, like dink says maybe it's just the shape of this one that he doesn't like?

well he's not even two months yet so if after some more time he still doesn't like the pacifier i'll just let him do whatever he wants (suck fingers, etc) and go with the flow!

Anyways, just want to update the pple who were very helpful in giving me advice on how to latch on the baby directly.. I am finally successful in doing so! I guess it helps now that my milk flow is stronger than before and she doesnt need to spend so much effort in sucking. But i do worry that she's not getting enough milk sometimes since she always falls asleep on my breast so i still express and try to give her a 'full' meal once or twice a day.

So happy that it's finally working out though.. thanks all!

if your baby is gaining weight, she's getting enough milk.
many babies fall asleep at the breast. it's hard work, sucking like that. both of mine always fell asleep.

I agree - I think it`s fine for the baby to fall asleep. To get that hindmilk they have to suck suck suck. It really tires them out. There are too many books out there that insist on keeping your baby awake during the feed, after the feed in order to get a schedule going, in order to have a happy baby, hehe.
My son (aka Mr. Giggles) fell asleep at the breast, or at least right after until about 2 months old. Then he started waking up for longer. Sometimes he just needed a recovery period of about 5-15 min and then he was full of beans.
