Baby poops everytime he passes gas

My baby is 4 weeks old and everytime he passes gas or sometimes even otherwise little poop comes out. His normal big poops are about 3- 4 times a day, but these small ones means I am changing his diaper every hour and at least thrice in the night. Because of this he has developed a candida nappy rash which is not responding to treatment.
A doctor I went to for second opinion told me yesterday to give him formula a few times to make his poop more solid. He said I was brain washed into the religion of breastfeeding and there was no real benefit of it after 6 months (All nonsense if you ask me).
Did anyone have a similar experience?? Any advise??

Eeek, what a horrible experience! Sounds like we often pay a fortune to be insulted by our doctors 'round here. I know I have done :-(

It's not even constructive advice, what relevance does their opinion of bf at 6 months have to a 4 week old?

We experienced the same thing with our daughter (she was exclusively breastfed and is still breastfeeding at 17 months) - many, many little poops all day, along with some big ones, though she only developed a minor diaper rash. I really didn't worry about it as everything else was fine. I did become a pro at changing messy diapers!

And as an aside, I would definitely find another doctor; believing that women are "brain washed into the religion of breastfeeding" is just insulting.

Yup, he lectured me for 10 minutes on why I should give my baby formula and not breastfeed him. Said I was nuts to breastfeed my first one for more than a year.
Anyhow I went to this doc just for a second opinion, our usual Pediatrician is Dr Henry Hui and he is treating the problem but not the root of it, which seems to be frequent poops which keeps keeps his diaper wet. So if there is a name for such a disorder and it can be treated somehow I would be glad to know.

yep, we used that too. my son almost never got nappy rash. my daughter used to get it if we didn't change the nappy within 5 minutes!

we tried everything and found that vaseline BEFORE any rash developped was the best for us. desitin was also ok.

Your doc is a clown. Ignore him.
Vaseline is THE BEST. I haven`t had to use anything else.
My baby didn`t poop as much as yours perhaps, but I was changing diapers A LOT when he was a newborn. He was like a little faucet, leaking poo. I don`t think that there might be anything wrong with him, especially as he is breastfed. It should change with time, especially when he starts feeding less often.
Just keep treating the rash and carry on with breastfeeding your poopy faucet baby.

Thanks everyone, so I am hoping that as he grows he stops leaking poo (Thanks, you put it in right words Shenzhennifer). And I am using Desitin too over the antibacterial and antifungal ointments given by doc.

You can also try Drapoline, works wonders with my son's nappy rash. I am also breastfeeding my 4-week old son, poops frequently.

when my daughter was little, we called her "squirt" because she squirted EVERYWHERE! including once all over daddy... projectile poop anyone? LOL!

BTW, are you using baby wipes? In my case, I find that the baby wipes aggravate the nappy rash. So, I stopped using them. I just use cotton pads (suzuran cleaning cotton) with warm water to wipe my son's bottom. Together with Drapolene, he is now rash-free. Yes, most of the time, he leaks when he poops. That means I also need to shower if he poops while I am carrying him!

Kaikosmom, I think you are right about that, whenever I use warm water directly to clean his bottom he does not cry but wipes make him scream these days. But then again using warm water and cloth would mean so much more work for poor me :(

My 3 weeks old baby also has the same problem of making a small poop when he passes gas, which is frequently. and his bottom is getting red. will try out "kaikosmom" method with suzuran wipes and warm water, perhaps the wet wipes isn't wet enough.

warm water and cloth is really not a lot of work! I have a plastic pitcher of cold water and a hot water bottle next to my change area as well as a little bowl and the suzuran cotton pads. When I need to change his diaper i just pour a little bit of hot and cold water into the bowl and dip a cotton pad in and voila! I suppose mildly more work than wet wipes, but once you set it up and get it ready, it's really not that much more work.....

Its not about wet wipes not being wet enough, its that they contain a lot of other ingredients that may hurt/ irritate already bruised skin. Warm water is mild and soothing. Besides using this method of cleaning you should also use a diaper rash cream at every nappy change and if your baby's condition does not improve/ gets worse in a week seem doctor's advise.

I also used warm water and cotton balls/pads when my babies were little and applied Vaseline at each change. Neither of them had much nappy rash. I think one of my kids (breastfed) had 15 pooey nappies one day! But if the nappy rash does continue, do see a doctor for advice (and NOT that one who lectured you about breastfeeding).
