Baby car seat (from newborn to 4-year-old)

Hi all,

I'm looking for a car seat which can be used since the baby is born until 4 years old. Apparently both Aprica and Combi offer this type of car seat, and I've heard good things about it from friends. Wonder what's your personal experience?

Thanks!

Since newborn needs more support than older toddler, I personally still prefer buying car seat by stage. Furthermore, I am driving my son around almost daily and I need something that is easy on loading and off loading, thus I am using Maxi Cosi's CarbrioFix ISOFIX system where I can detach the car seat off from the base and put it onto the Quinney stroller. I am about to switch to stage 2 car seat in the near future.

gosh, i cannot even imagine a carseat that would serve both as newborns need to be facing inwards and not outwards like when they become toddlers. like dTB, we used the maxi cosi infant carseat until my son was 12-13 months and he started sitting in an out facing one, at 14 months.

Thank you very much for the inputs. I'm thinking about getting Maxi Cosi's CarbrioFix + ISOFIX base + Quinny Zapp so that I can use the set when driving my own car or taking a taxi. Do you think it'll work well? Also, I assume that you can use the same ISOFIX base with Maxi Cosi's PrioriFix when the baby is older than 12 months?

for the maxi cosi's priorifix, you don't need to use a separate isofix base as the seat and the base is fixed and attached together.

Thanks. As my husband and I will drive the baby around only on the weekends, does it still make sense to get the ISOFIX base? How safe is it to just use the regular seatbelt?

if you use the regular seatbelt to fix the carseat properly, it is also safe of course. just if you have a base fixed already in the car, then it is much easier to take in and out the carseat from the car everytime by clicking it in. you can only use the isofix base if you car has the isofix in the seat. otherwise, you can buy that with normal base.

I know we should be strapping in children , always regardless, but is it a legal requirement like back in uk, if so what about in taxi and public transport. I know in canada the law is very very strict on this

Does anyone know if Maxi Cosi infant car seat be compatible to Bugaboo Bee Stroller? I have a Bugaboo Bee Stroller and am looking for a infant car seat. Instead of buying also a seperate baby cocoon which costs about HKD1000-, it would be great to have a car seat that can be used with the stroller as well. Also, am looking for 2nd hand one if there's any.

Yes, the Maxi Cosi infant car seat fits with the Bugaboo Bee Stroller - you just need the adaptor to attach it with.

No, there are no laws in HK regarding strapping babies and toddlers (and even 3-10-yr-olds) into car seats. The only laws are the laws of physics. In a crash, body weight can increase by as much as 30times - even at relatively low speeds - so you cannot physically hold on to your child (unless you think you are strong enough to bear the weight of 30kg or 60kg that is shooting forward at 40km/ph)

Check out The Car Seat Lady for great advice on travelling with a child in cars and taxis.

And for anyone using a Baby Bjorn, here's some frightening information:

"Researchers Kathleen Weber and John Melvin of the Highway Safety Research Institute at the University of Michigan Medical School tested this scenario using a 30 mph, front, dynamic crash test of the type required by the current federal safety standard for child car seats. In the crash test, an adult held the baby in a soft, cloth front carrier like the Baby Bjorn and used a lap/shoulder belt. The researchers found that this infant was at a very high risk. The tested carrier shredded completely, ejecting the infant dummy into the dashboard. If the carrier had not shredded, they found that the infant would likely still not have survived. As the adult's head traveled forward in the whiplash motion, the adult's chin would have slammed down into the infant's head right where the soft spot is.

"If you find yourself in a taxi with just your infant and a Baby Bjorn (hopefully you never will), there is no way to protect your baby. However, you can still protect yourself by wearing your seatbelt. Putting the seatbelt over you and the baby will only make matters worse. It will not help the baby and will endanger you in the process."

Apologies if this is preachy - but if it saves a life, it's worth it.
