Arrow really hit the spot for us!

Thanka2, the owner of Arrow called us about the test result earlier this week, which means it was just about 2-3 weeks before the helper is supposed to be here! I must admit that I was very very disappointed and I cried over it. Because I want to go back to work very very much, with the helper supposed to be here in early April, I planned to go back to work in June/July. Now that my whole plan is screwed.

We tried different routes to hire helpers before. Our first helper was a word-of-mouth reference from my ex-coworker, and our second helper was from asiaexpat. We tried both routes and obviously that didn't turn out quite well.

So we decided to go thru agency this time. Arrow may not be the best in administrative work, but at least they are very honest people and that is very important imo. So... I don't know what to do... we are waiting...
 
those routes didn't turn out because of the helpers, NOT because they don't work.

it could be just that you've had bad luck?
 
carang, I know, that's why I am always told and I always think that I don't have the 'fate' to have a helper, or a good helper!
 
My friend introduced a philippina agent to me. What I liked about this agency is that I can get to see the applicants in person. In fact I can request for trials. I feel that what u see is what u get.. I just signed a helper and she has gone back to the Philippines for 2 weeks. I hope she will turn out good..
I guess a lot of luck is involved to get a good helper..
 
gladys, in no way am i being critical (i know that sometimes, when something is written instead of said in person, it can be taken the wrong way)...

what have your problems been with finding a helper?

my helper is in no way perfect, but she does everything satisfactorily. she's good with the kids, doesn't mind disciplining them (following our example), but she doesn't "play" with them very often. she takes them to the park, she reads to them, she has them help her do some simple cooking, she will watch a tv programme with them, but she doesn't "play" with them. (not too bad as they prefer playing together anyway).

she is a very good cook. she has some excellent dishes and some ok dishes. she doesn't do most of the marketing as we live too far away for her to carry it home, so she has to work with what i buy.

her cleaning is ok. when my second starts school in september, i'm going to expect the house to be spotless... until then, it's adequate.

i know that no one can be perfect at everything. so, you need to decide if you want:

1) someone that does everything satisfactorily (not necessarily the way YOU would do it, but not too bad)

or
2) someone that specialises in one thing (ie. childcare)

when our helper started with us, i made very clear to her that until the kids were older, her MAIN job was childcare/cooking. as the kids have gotten older, she has spent more time on the cleaning and other things she does.
 
My husband and I think our darling baby girl is on top of everything else, so childcare is our top priority.

However, both helpers we had before failed in that. We stated very clear when they started with us, that if my husband and I are out of the house to work, the only duty for them is to look after the baby, no housework, no cooking, nothing just the baby. We did the cooking and marketing ourselves and the helpers did the housework only when we were home. To me, being my helper is like the job in the heaven, only to take care of a newborn baby and simple housework occasionally.

Our first helper failed because she has no idea about safety. She passed a basin full of extremely hot water over the crib while my newborn baby was sleeping in it. She left the baby on the changing table alone. She said 'yes' to everything but did everything wrong. She mixed thawed breastmilk with chilled. etc etc etc.

Our second helper failed in the same thing, safety. EVERYTIME she fed the baby she would fell asleep, and I really mean EVERYTIME!! That's crazy I have never seen someone fall asleep so easily! Whenever she sits down to give baby the bottle she would fall asleep, that is SO SCARY!! And the thing she made us finally decided to fire her immediately was she lied to us, she didn't feed baby the whole afternoon and evening, my baby was crying crazy cuz of hunger when my husband back home from work (I was working night shift in the hospital), and she kept lying and said she fed the baby. And after my husband's confrontation with her, she admitted she lied.

I don't think we are asking for too much, just to take good care of the little baby. My baby girl was just 0-6months when the helpers were with us, we only asked the helper to feed her and change her, that's all, I was responsible to bath the baby myself. If it's only giving bottle and changing diaper and they cannot do well, I really don't know what else to say...
 
wow! that's TERRIBLE! i can totally understand your concerns!

how much experience did these women say they had?
did you hire them when they were already in hk? or were they in their home country and then come to hk?

i'll keep an ear open, if you like. i see a lot of helpers at school etc...

i can't imagine what you went through! yikes!

Our first helper was a referral from one of our friends, she is a cousin of our friend's helper, who was also our part-time helper. She claimed she has 2 kids and her experience came from raising her own kids. After she was with us, we found out she only raised one of the kids, her family raised her first kid while she was working in HK. We hired her from the Philippines.

We found our second helper thru the ads on asiaexpat. She worked in the Singapore in a family with twins, then worked in HK for another 2 years in a family with 2 little girls. She is an indonesian lady and we hired her when she was already in HK.

We had no choice but me quit working being a SAHM. I just hope we can have some luck in finding a good helper, so I can go back to work and help put some much needed money on the table!
 
Gladyswly, that must have been such a bad experience!! I guess it's so hard to trust helpers with babies.. They are so young and fragile.. But to the helpers, they are just another job. I still can't get over the not feeding part of your 2nd helper. Who would have such a heart to starve a baby?! I mean helpers do wrong things all the time, but starving the baby is just so wrong!

I am getting my helper from this agency recommended by my friend. The best thin I like abt this agency is that they have alot of applicants locally, so I get to interview them personally and a trial run at my home. I believe in what u see is what u get! (after my previous maid lied in her biodata that she is a graduate when she dun even understand English!)
when u are ready for another helper, u might want to consider this agent.
 
it is perfectly possible that she was a graduate, but that the subject she graduated in was not conducted in english?)
 
Must be wondering why u didn't interview her or something.. Yes, it was my fault. I applied for a helper thru an agency and unfortunately just few days before her departure from Philippines, the test results shows that she was pregnant!! So I had to terminate her while she was still there (visa was approved). Agent call my sister in law (she was the one who introduced us this agent) but couldn't get her is she went on holiday.. Wasted 2 weeks, didn't bothered to call us eventhoufh we give her all the numbers. When my Sis in law finally came back got the message and call us.. We were desperate for a helper. Agent say she had file for the 2nd choice already and shouldn't be a problem. But the problem was I didn't even get to interview her... But I gave it a shot. And look what happened!!
So I have decided: will only take a helper IF I had interviewed her personally, and let her try out at my home, interact with my children to see if they like her. Of cos I know even by doing all these things might still not work out. But at least I tried hard enough..:treadmill
 
ihave3cats, so are you using the same agency this time as last time? The last agency you used sounds horrible for not contacting you and just gave you another helper that you didn't even talk to!

I think when it comes to agencies it is definitely not the norm to be able to interview domestic helper candidates in person. However, Arrow sometimes has domestic helpers that are available for face-to-face interview. The agency you're using sounds a bit different in that it is run by people from the Philippines and probably the candidates that are available for face-to-face interviews have either finished their contracts and are looking for new employers or have been terminated. Otherwise, they wouldn't be in Hong Kong just job seeking. So, I'm curious to know if you've asked if the helper you are employing was terminated or is just at the end of her contract? Also curious to find out what the answer to that question was from the agency staff. I think there are few agencies who would be as honest as Arrow has been when it comes to termination. If a helper is up for rehire because of termination they are completely honest about it. I think most other agencies would just say, "Oh, she's at the end of her contract" regardless.

Also, I am curious to find out what your reason for hiring a helper is--what is your main priority? Do you have little children that need care or is it more for the domestic operation of your house (cooking, cleaning etc.). As you are quite new here (it seems as far as post numbers are concerned) it would be good to see what angle you're coming from.

My main thing when it comes to the overall performance of an agency is the agency itself. It really is "luck of the draw" when it comes to hiring a helper. Every person we've talked to in HK who has any experience with having a domestic helper has told us pretty much the same thing--getting a good domestic helper is about as lucky as winning the Mark 6. So, I think that most agencies are offering employees basically from the same backgrounds--from the same labor pool in the Philippines (or Indonesia). Some helpers work out. Some don't. That's life--same thing in the labor market here in HK--if you're a boss and you hire someone, there is always a risk that that person isn't going to be the right person for the job for whatever reason (lazy, unskilled, not the right "fit" for your company etc.) It's no different with helpers.

But, I have been impressed with Arrow's followup service--they do much more than any other agency I've heard of. They pretty much take full responsibility for the laborers they provide to employers here. If this agency that you're going through ends up being just as good, definitely give us the name so that we can have another choice for agencies to go through.
 
actually, one of the requirements i told the agency we worked with (way back when) was that i could interview the helper directly. i would ONLY take a helper who had finished a contract (not terminated) AND was in hk.

they had MANY people available for interviews that fit those two criteria.
 
The agency was horrible! We were so mad with the agent we wanted to lodge a huge complaint. However, this is a friend of my sister in law and my husband didn't want to make it too ugly.

I will never go back to the agent ever again! I am currently using another agent whom my friend introduced. So far she seems ok. I will not comment until my helper comes in. But I love the idea that I get to interview personally. The old agent of mine told me that getting fresh ones from philippines is the only safe way!! Since we just came last dec, we were innocent enough to believe her. Also becos she was recommended so we didn't think it will turn out bad. Anyway, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I have 2 young children, 2.5 and 4. I also have 3 long hair cats. This means that my home is constantly filled with fur. The apartment is not big so inorder for cats and children to co-exist I figure the floor needs to be cleaned twice a day at least. I need a helper to help me with those.. Since moving to hk I spend so much time cleaning and so little time with the children. My husband is not helpful. He is almost never around..
 
I wanted to update this thread with the most recent chapter of our experience with Arrow.

Well, our new helper has been here with us for about 3 weeks and she is.....AMAZING! I am so glad we hired her. I picked her up at the MTR closest to our house and in the taxi on the way to our house she already had her notepad out and was taking notes--without being asked! She is so switched on and just a wonderful all-around person. And my son does really well with her. She knows how to stand up to him and he respects her. In three weeks she has done better than our previous helper did in three months! She has completely adapted to our way of living and isn't at all intimidated by Hong Kong. This is her absolute first time in Hong Kong and even outside of the Philippines and that has absolutely no negative effect on her service. We are so happy! Thanks, Arrow!
