Applying for Passport for New Born

Hi

I will be applying for a passport for my new born baby. I am a little confused, with some thread saying that even if my son is born in HK we need to get a passport from the embassy 1st instead of applying directly for a HKSAR passport.

Our situation is my husband is a canada resident as well as a HK permanant resident (he is born here). I myself do hold a HKID too but I am actually a singaporean.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I think for your child to be able to get a HKG passport, one of the parents must be a Chinese citizen.

If your child is eligible to get a HKG passport, it really doesnt matter which passport he applies for first. I applied for 2 passports for 2 of my kids simultaneously.

Best to call the immigration department.
 
you need to apply for HK passport first. because if you apply for the other passports first, you have to give them up when you apply for HK passport. But you can keep your HK passport when appplying for another country's passport. So weird.

or just do at the same time since, legally, you have no passport to give up when you apply for the hk one.

i'm like you..s'porean mom with a HK hubby.
My son who's born here in HK have both HK passport as well as S'pore passport. What S'pore immigration told me when I was applying for the passport is that it doesn't matter how many passports my son have, just that when he turns 21, he has to renounce other citizenships if he wants to keep his s'pore passport. Oh, and it's much faster to get the HK passport than S'pore passport...in case you need to travel urgantly.

I am not sure which passport do you prefer, Canadian, Singaporean or a HKSAR passport. I don't think you have to give up your HKSAR passport when you apply for other countries passport. However, when you apply for the HKSAR passport, they will ask you about your baby's nationality. If you declare you baby as a Singapore citizen, then he/she will not be eligable for the HKSAR passport. Only Chinese Citizen, plus Hong Kong permenent resident (details please refer to the HK immigration web page) is eligable for a HKSAR passport. Please note that this is a declaration. Since your baby was born in HK of Chinese descent, he/she can get a HKSAR passport provided that when he/she uses the HKSAR passport to travel, he/she is a citizen of China.

My baby got his HK birth certificate and on his birth certificate its stated that his permanent status been established.

I will go to the immigration to try to get his HKSAR passport done on Wednesday.
 
no need to go to immigration in person - you can just download the form from the HK Gov website and mail everything in - that's what I did! It's real convenient!
 
It completely depends on the country whether a country allows multiple / dual citizenship, so not one rule applies for all, check with your local representative. My children have US / Dutch citizenship. The US allows them dual citizenship but the Dutch have certain rules, which aren't applicable just yet, but could be in the long run. However, you have to ask yourself if they could ever find out. We applied for US first (country of birth) and later for Dutch (1/2 year for my oldest, 18 months later for my twins), even though my husband and I are both Dutch.
