Any Mommies due in Jan 08

Hi Mummies who are delivering in january...

I just saw your thread... my name is Maggie. I'm one of the La Leche League Leaders in Hong Kong (La Leche League is an international breastfeeding support group).

I just wanted to let you know that we have a meeting at my flat in Happy Valley on Tuesday December 11th. 2.00 til 4.00. you can get the address from our website: www.lllhk.org

I wonder if you would be interested in coming along and finding out more about breastfeeding - this is the BEST time NOW... BEFORE baby arrives!!

In the first half of the meeting we talk about a particular issue related to breastfeeding - this month we are looking at breastfeeding out and about in HK. In the second half of the meeting we talk about whatever concerns the mothers present have - so if pregnant mothers show up, we always talk about how to get breastfeeding off to a good start in hospital and during the early days.

I guess you might have covered some of this sort of stuff in ante natal classes, but you really can't overdose on breastfeeding info.

ANd if you can't make a meeting you can always call any of the La Leche League Leaders on the website, chat through the basic principles of breastfeeding BEFORE baby arrives and of course once baby is here... feel free to give us a call - even if it's just a small concern. Much better to get small problems fixed... before they become big ones.

If you want to give me a call about this my tel. number is below:
Best wishes for a smooth birth
Maggie

Maggie, this is my second child and I will breastfeed just like with my first, no issues, but nice to know such a group exists in HK.

Wasabibunny, thank you for the welcome! I think the Bel-Air is going to be a great place to live! Thank you for your comments regarding helpers- this is a difficult process for me since in the States you do not have live-in help. I think we have found someone, want to interview her one more time and have her play with my son to see their interaction. Will be seeing you I'm sure very soon:)

Wasabibunny- so happy the ending is pleasant for you....I have been carrying my 29 lb. toddler around the mid-levels and feel just exhausted! We move to our new apartment at the Bel-Air (are you in phase 2 Wasabibunny?) in a few weeks and I can't wait!!!!

Went on a tour of Matilda hospital where I was told by my doctor's office I was to deliver...they gave me a lovely tour and then checked their list and I am not on it! Not stressful at all, ha ha. So now I have to speak with my OB (Dr. Ghosh) this week and find out what is going on and what I am suppose to do now. I am 33 weeks today and definitely feel like this baby will make an early appearance (I felt like I was about to give birth while walking up the 50 steps holding my son at HK Park playground today).

Also in the midst of hiring a helper, which is a very odd process to me being from the US. I always treated my babysitters like family, they ate with us, we all went to the park together, more like friends. I know this arrangement will be different, so I'm trying to think about that when I interview. Having someone living with you- I want to make sure they are a good fit for our family, but I understand from many people that you often go through one or two helpers at the beginning before you find one that really clicks.

Sorry for the long ramble. I hope all the other Jan. moms are doing well:)

HI NYCMOM,

Was wondering how you went with finding out from Dr. Ghosh if you are delivering at the Matilda? I am due around 29th Jan and have recently moved to HK. This is our first baby.

I'll be seeing Dr Ghosh for the reminder of my pregnancy and he seems quite confident that we'll get to deliver at Matilda although the official line from the hopsital is that they are fully booked till July 08. I'm not sure if i should be worried abt the lack of certainty.

Marissa

Hi Marissa,

Welcome to Hong Kong! Where are you arriving from? I spoke with Dr. Ghosh at my last OB appt. last Thursday and told him that I went on a tour at Matilda and then they told me I was NOT on the list to deliver, that they were full, but they did have my application. He seemed concerned and called in his nurse and asked her if I was confirmed and she said she confirmed me yesterday. He said it's best not to ask the Matilda, that his office has a certain channel they work with to secure their patients a place. Not sure what that all means, but I am moving forward thinking I have a spot for my due date of Jan. 20, although it's pretty certain I will go early, have been having a lot of pressure and pain (the pain feels like when you get a pap smear or have a UTI, really nice!) Dr. Ghosh said I wasn't dilated, but he did put me on a magnesium supplement to delay my body from going into labor too early. I am home during the day by myself with my 29lb. 19 mth old son, so the option to rest is not really there- which is probably the cause of all the pain. Are you settled in HK? Where will you be living? It's such a fantastic place isn't it! Although I really miss internet shopping.

NYCMOM... there are lots of channels to shops online in Hong Kong... u just have to find them :) what do you like to buy online?

really? that's wonderful to hear! I bought almost everything online in the US, especially using Amazon. Right now would love to buy basic household items like coffee maker, vacuum, toaster, etc. We even bought our TV and computer online. Please let me know of any websites you recommend. I got very frustrated today because we went to IKEA (with our son, big mistake) and ordered a lot of furniture to have delivered and then decided we wanted to add some more items to the order and change the bed color, but when I called customer service, they told me they couldn't change anything, that I would need to go back to the store (even though the items were being delivered from their warehouse and not until Saturday). Taking my son back to IKEA by myself this pregnant just to wait in line to speak to customer service was NOT an option. This is when I began to miss Amazon.com (and their free shipping) Baby Gap and Old Navy kid's clothes too, I loved to order those online. I know Stanley is a good place to go for kid's clothes, but it takes such effort to look through all the tiny stalls, we couldn't find anything last time we were there. Just an adjustment period I guess. I really like Hong Kong, just a bit homesick while nesting I guess.

Dear NYCMOM,

You can try the online shop associated with this webpage http://www.shopinhk.com/ especially for books. Wing On is a department store http://www.wingonet.com/index/index.php that sells most household stuff (coffee makers and toasters and such) but their sellection is limited compared to the US I am sure. Also, both ParkNShop and Wellcome grocery stores deliver for free if you order more than $500. http://www.wisepet.com/eindex.htm is great if you have pets. There are lots of links on this website too for baby stuff. Hope that's a start... I think you are stuck with furniture though... you can try www.fortress.com.hk for electronics (you have to click on the "ENG" tab at the top to direct you to the english page, i couldn't find a direct english link that works). Hope this is a start!

Hi Marissa and NYCMOM,

My husband and I moved to HK last month and I am 34 weeks pregnant with my first. Our due date is Feb 3 and our scheduled surgery date at the Matilda is Jan 28. We live in the mid-levels and have been very busy getting settled into making the home comfy. Now that the baby is arriving in a month I'm beginning to concentrate on the baby staples. I too miss the US internet shopping! Haven't gotten to the domestic helper staqe, since we do not have our HK ID cards as of yet. Just wanted to introduced myself since the anxiety is setting in and the holidays are almost over.

woohoo 37 weeks!!! so excited :)

but I can't sleep most night now... I fall alseep and wake up hours later... I feel bad for my hubby because he doesn't sleep well when I don't :P but only a couple more weeks to go (hopefully). I really really don't want to be late!!!

Hi wasabibunny,

Totally hearing you about the sleep part, i can't fall asleep and when i do, i need pee breaks, then i can't get back to sleep. I am walking around like a narky insomniac. Still, only 8 days till our big day. I am having my C-section on 11th Jan. Looking forward to meeting our little girl. It's weird though, you count down and you can't wait, time flies, then suddenly, time seems to speed up and you wonder if you are ready at all. Guess that's most first-time mums feel...

Heather,

I agree... sometime I just know I will miss my big belly and being pregnant but most other times I am really excited about seeing the baby. I am hoping for a natural birth so the anticipation is even higher since you don't know when it will happen! Best of luck and enjoy your last week of kicks and squirms inside your belly :)

Hi sanFranciscomom,

My due date is also Feb 3rd and I'm having my baby at the Matilda too - maybe see you there!
Hope you are enjoying HK so far!

update

Hi all,

Have not been on for a while but thought i would give you an update. i am due 13th jan and still no sign of bubs yet and no obvious symptoms yet. my back is aching all the time and have devleloped a waddle now as i think baby is moving lower down. i agree on the sleep thing, am just constantly tired at the minute but sleep does not appear to be happening for very long.
i have an obs appointment tomorrow so will update you if anything exciting said. two weeks ago i was 3/5 engaged but cervix was firmly closed and high, so hopefully progress has been made since then - cannot wait to meet bubs.
hope all other jan mums to be doing well

I just had my 37 week checkup... Doc told me that baby's about 3kg and everything's looking great and normal. He doesn't think I will be too early (I was really hoping baby would come in a week) but I guess I will just have to wait patiently till he's ready. I also don't look forward to having to visit my doc every week... what a pain. Hope all the other mommies are doing well. I can't wait! But also dredding getting back into shape. I've put on 35 lbs (16kgs) and was watching some plastic surgery show on TV. I would hate to have to eventually get a tummy tuck... ewwy. Well I'm just blabbing now :P Hope everyone's well.

Hello Eva08 and everyone,

I will look forward to seeing you Eva! My scheduled date is Jan 28th, so I should still be there.

I go to Dr Gosh and he partners with Dr Thandup I have seen him with children and he is wonderful. For a child not to want to leave a Doctors office says alot I have seen this not once but on several occasions. My friend also goes to Dr Thandup and just says he got a real connection with kids so definitely will be going to him.

Hi all January Moms,

Just an update- I was due on January 20 and actually went into labor on Dec. 31 and had my son Gabriel at 3:19am on Jan. 1! Early arrival! I was 37 weeks just barely, but he still weighed in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. The first baby of the New Year born at Matilda Hospital. Great stay there, miss it actually. Gabriel is eating well (I'm bfing) and sleeping well. Anyways, good luck to all of you and let me know if any of you live in the Cyberport area for playdates (I also have a 20 month old son Douglas).

p.s. We are from the US and many of our friends want to send us presents- are there any websites for baby stuff in HK so they don't have to pay outrageous shipping from the US?

Best,
Kendal

Congratulations NYCMom! What a lovely start to the NY.

i think its time to resurrect the Cyberport coffee on Thurs. Let us know when you're up for it and will post a msg on the main forum.
