Any advice for long cycle/confusing fm signs

Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone is in the same boat as me and can offer any insights into a plan of action for me as I am TTC and not having luck at all.

I have come off the pill after being on it for 15 years for acne. The first three months I had no period. Now that is has returned (it has been 5 months now) I seem to have a 43 day cycle.

We are TTC but at this stage, it is terrible confusing to me. Just when I am sure I see fertile mucous one day, it goes away the next, only to appear to come back a few days later. I seem to want to eat like a horse/sleep all day/ and be a terrible crab in the week leading up to the 'supposed time of ovualtion' (I did one of those online predictors that tells you the days they think you will ovulate) The other thing is that I have been using OPK and none have said yes. I even have the saliva test kit and again......not once I have seen any ferning.

Has anyone else been through confusion like this when TTC? I am wondering if I need to see a Dr about my very long cycle. I get a light period lasting 4 days.

Kind regards,

Jan

Hi Jan
I really think it might be worth you seeing a Dr. I have struggled with irregular very long cycles since being a teenager. I recently went to see Dr Christine Choy and she confirmed that I have PCOS. As acne is also another symptom of PCOS it may be that you have it too? Definitely worth checking it out. If you do have PCOS then the Dr can prescribe medication and diet that will help regulate your cycle and help you to conceive.
I have had 2 boys prior to knowing about the PCOS but it cost a lot of money in OPKs and I definitely wasn't ovulating every month.
It could save you a lot of time if you have everything checked out.
Good luck

Hi Aussiemum (I'm an Aussie too!)

Thanks so much for your advice.

A long time ago.....maybe 5 months....I went to see Dr Alex Doo for a gynae check up and he said all was normal. I remember he said that the ovaries were a good size and that he expected pregnancy to come along soon. He knew I was on the pill for acne for a long time and he said he thought everthing would go back to normal soon. But it hasn't and I am struggling with the bad acne again!

No I have not had a hormone check actually. What does having a very long cycle (like 43 days) usually mean?

It may mean you have PCOS, I am quite amazed that the Dr did not check your hormone levels. Usually with PCOS there is a hormone imbalance- one being the FSH level is higher than normal, periods are irregular and last for 3- 4 days only with the flow being less than usual. Acne, excess facial hair, weight gain and low energy levels are other signs of PCOS. The fact that the ovulation monitor hasn't picked up on your ovulation may mean you have not ovulated or are ovulating irregularly. So you should see another doctor who specialises in fertility issues. Good luck :)

Hi January,
I was in the exact same position as you. Had been on the pill for 13 years without break. I came off the pill last September and did not have a period for three months. I then was on 39 day cycles until I fell pregnant in February. I think it is premature to be diagnosing PCOS based on the information provided. I had terrible acne when I came off the pill and long cycles and I do not have PCOS. This is very common for the body to take some time to adjust, particularly after having hormones controlled by the pill for such a long time. I also found my cm signs to be confusing and the trick for me to conceive was using OPKs and monitoring temperatures. I found the fertility friend website to be very useful for this. It turns out I was ovulating much later than I thought (around day 28). Coincidentally I am using Dr Doo as my OB and have found him to be excellent and extremely thorough.
