I'm 5 weeks along and already seeing my belly getting slightly bigger....Am I just thinking too much or is this normal. Anyone experiencing this also?

Hi Somebodyfamous,

I don't think it's twins cuz never had any history of twins in either my or my hubby's side. But, it will be a suprise if it is!!

CheriC were you very slim pre-pregnancy? I heard that if so, you tend to put on more weight earlier on in the pregnancy, so maybe that's it.

If you are concerned about the belly/weight, make sure you continue to eat a healthy diet and exercise (consult your doctor). Some take that "eating for 2" way too far for too many months.

Hi

Same here! I am almost 10 weeks pregnant and was showing very early (4/5 weks).

Since the move to Hong Kong in Jan the stress and exceitement at being somewhere else meant I went down to about 5kg under weight. So pre pregnant weight was 57kg (I am 5'11"). I have now put the 5 kg on plus another couple!!! I am basically taking it easy - chilled out, eating healthily : a little bit more then I was but not too much, and I feel great. (No sickness, moodiness or anything - is that a good thing? ... worry worry ...)

I thought I was having twins so went for an early scan ... it is just the one!!!

I think your body does what it needs to do, I certainly am not over eating - in fact if you look at my calorie intake for a day it is within the recommended daily amount for my height etc ... but I still put on lots of weight. If that is what my body needs to do to produce a healthy baby then I say "bring it on" lol (Although I hope I dont get toooo fat)!

BTW I had a friend who did nothing but eat chips and burgers through her pregnancy, it may or may not be related but she now has a daughter with terrible bowl problems ... she has also not been able to lose the pre pregnancy weight and it has gone 2 yrs. So yes, totally agree with Sleuth ... dont take the eating for two thing too seriously hehe.

I know someone who ate McDonalds throughout her pregnancy and her baby had numerous stomach and eating problems. Eat healthy and often. :agree:

You're going to gain weight. The textbook answer is one pound/2.2 kilos for each week, but not everyone qualifies as "textbook". Common sense would suggest that 1/2 of that rate might be a problem as would double that rate. Eating healthy (McDs once is not bad, just don't do it every day) and exercising should keep the correct weight coming--and make it easier coming off after the birth.

Usually only when you enter the 2nd trimester you'll start to gain 1 pound/ week as baby's catching up in size. In the first trimester though, some people experience nausea so may even lose some weight. In any case if you eat and rest well, and that your baby is growing healthy inside you, don't worry too much about the weight issue or when it starts to show. Good luck!

Yes, CherA, quite right. The pound a week is a middle-end of pregancy goal, not a first month goal.
Jaetee--Just saw an article in Shape magazine which gave a healthy all-McDs diet. They just didn't eat the food I normally associate with McDs.

Well...I think it doesn't do any harm to have McD meal once every now and then. I believe you generally eat well and exercise regularly, your baby should be fine.

I am actually more concerned on the artifical chemicals we take in every day! I am getting very cautious nowadays. I read everything before I eat!

BTW, I am on 9 weeks and I haven't gained any weight. I seem to be sick once other day!

Here are the current US weight-gain guidelines (from Iffath Hoskins, MD, Chair of Ob-Gynat Lutheran Medical in NYC):

overweight women should gain 15 to 25 pounds
normal weight women should gain 25 to 35 pounds
underweight women should gain 28 to 40 pounds
(Men shouldn't gain anything, but it happens....)
There is currently a debate about the gains for overweight women because of the obesity situation in the US

And I thought this was interesting:
the fetus will weigh 7 to 7.5 pounds (okay, our baby was over 8)
the placenta will weigh 3.5 to 5 pounds
amniotic fluid will weigh 2 or 3 pounds
retained water will weigh 5 to 7 pounds
when the baby is born, the mom is usually left with about 1/4 of the weight gain

my boy only weighed 5.5 pounds....

i weighed 80.4 kgs when i got regnant... went down to 72.1 by week 20... the day i gave birth i was 82.4 kgs....the first day i could get to a scale afterward (day 2 i think) i was 75.1 kgs....

BUT when i was BF, i couldn't stop eating and ballooned up to 84 kgs!!!

after 2 years i'm down to 77 kgs...and almost 10 weeks along with #2!!

I just had McDs for lunch - ugh, must stop that habit now.

Once in a while is fine. The person I met picked up McD every day on her way home from work.

Don't you people sleep? I can't be sure of my math, but 12 hours ahead of Atlanta would seem to make it about 12:30 am in HK.

Carang--Revealing my wife's weight on the web would be a mistake. But
she gained about 35 pounds while pregnant, our baby is 10 weeks old and she has dropped almost all of it. Keep in mind she had stopped the pilates but was still doing step aerobics and yoga (both modified for pregnancy), 4 days before labor and has been back at all 3 for a few weeks now. I think the exercise helped her put on healthy weight, helped keep the baby heallthy and eased delivery; now it is helping her drop the unwanted pounds.

I am showin a bit early as well

I am five weeks..... and I am showing a little as well.... I really think it might be a combination of bloating and water weight for me... but I think it is different for every woman. In my first pregnancy I have to add... I did eat healthy most of the time, but you know what I did endulge myself every so often, we deserve it I believe.... men don't have to go through half what we do we need to pamper ourselves in some ways.... just thought I would throw that in there.:pregnant:
