I've been in hk 2 months and my 8 month old has had a cough on and off since arriving. it's worse just when she wakes up and i wondered if it's the air con. Should i let her sleep with it on or off? any siggestions/ideas appreciated.

:thanks

Personally, in this heat, I would keep the air con on but would advise you buy air filters/purifiers for your rooms. The pollution in HK is really bad at the moment and it can be one of the causes that is triggering your little one's cough. If the cough continues, I would take her to the doctors just in case.

Also, if you are not doing so already, it might help to make sure the filters in the aircon are free from dust and mould.

Have you been cleaning the filters regularly in your airconditioners? We used to do it sporadically pre-baby as both my husband and I work so we're out of the house all day. Now with the baby at home, we have the aircons on all day so I now get our helper to clean the filters once a week.

You may also want to put a humidifier in the room as airconditioning can be very drying.

We're in serviced apartments, do you think they clean the filters?

Also, can you recommend a good humidifier/purifier.

Its the hong kong air quality and there's not much you can do apart from leaving HK. When I am in he UK, I am relatively healthy but as soon as I arrive in HK, I start coughing. On the last occassion, I had to go to A&E because it got really bad.

The other thing to try is an air purifier. The good ones from Bumos to Babes are expensive though. The brand is IQAir and there is lots of info on the internet about them as well as brochures at Bumps to Babes.

we have the Mitsubishi dehumidifiers and Rowenta ones. The Mitsubishi can be an air purifier and we got both at Sogo. yes, leave the air con, but perhaps adjust the temp so it's not so cold? remember that babies sleep better in colder environments.
