Hi mums

I am double minded and need to consult yr experience

1. I am around 30 weeks pregnant now, i have to come back with my hubby back home in Lahore for an emergency when I was 26 weeks now we are planing to come back to HK for delivery, my pregnancy so far is very smooth without any problem so what do u suggest, we have four hour flight fm Lahore to Bangkok and then 2 hours from Bangkok to hong kong after 2 hours break for plane change

2. We register for birth at public hospital (united Christian hospital kwun tong) and first appointment was of 8th Nov but was not able to attend because we travelled back on 5th NOV so can we still enjoy public hospital birth since we both have ID card

Your suggestion means a lot for me, waiting

Hi there!

traveling at 30weeks is no problem, as long as you had a pregnancy with no complications!
I flew from hong kong to europe (17 hours total) last week, and i had no problems! I did get up several times to walk around, to pee and to stretch my legs and everything was just fine! The only thing you need to check is the airline's policy.
I was 31weeks far, and my airline allowed me to board with only a medical certification, stating i was fit to fly. After 32weeks, i would have also needed a special permission from the airline itself.

I think at about 34 weeks the airlines will start requesting a doctor's note, or just refusing to let you fly. You might want to check with your airline as to the specifics of their rules.

One of the big concerns is dehydration. You should be sure to drink plenty of liquid while on the plane as dehydration can lead to some premature labor situations. I think the general rule is about 8-12fl oz per hour on the plane (12 fl oz is about the size of a can of Coke).

Hello jus to share.. I dun think is much of a problem to travel back for you. I am singaporean but live in hong kong. When I had my first child, I travel back and fro Singapore for the impt check such as the detailed foetus scan in order to keep my record with my gynae. Had no problem with that at all... When its time to go back to Singapore in preparation for delivery, I flew back when I was wk 34 coz due to work I can't take such a long leave thats why i left so late. Everything went smoothly. But I do have a doctor letter that certify I am fit to travel. The air crew did not check actually coz I was not very big...so I dun think you shd worried too much. :)

Oh like some ladies had suggested make sure u are well hydrated and also do get up to walk ard a but ESP during ur 4 hr flight :)

For the public hospital, I think you need to have attended at least one appointment there before you go into labour. I was also told that I could skip appointments but need to attend after week 36.

Maybe best to give the MCH/hospital a call and find out directly, even if it means making an international call, if you're relying on delivery in a public hospital. That said, in the worst case, you can turn up at the Emergency of a public hospital and they would have to take you in but I wouldn't want to go through the insecurity of that.

Hi all,

Many many thanks for replies especiallly Leta

Pls let me know if public hospital do not take me in can i arrange a private hospital in hurry to give birth in HK

You will have to speak to the public hospital in your home catchment area where you are registered and confirm their particular policies as they can vary by hospital. As long as you attend at least one appointment you should be fine. There is also the public emergency room option, as others have noted, but should be avoided if possible.

Also, make sure you have your HK ID card with you when travelling to HK while pregnant. When I traveled from the US to HK when I was expecting I had misplaced my ID card and had a bit of trouble (took almost 3 hours) for me to clear immigration on the HK side even though I had a valid HK work visa in my US passport. Not sure exactly what they were concerned about, but apparently something to do with pregnant women entering HK...

Regarding your flight, each airlines have their own rules for flying. If you are after 28 weeks, the safe route is to get a letter from your doctor stating how far along you are and that you are fit to fly. If the staff have any concerns about how far along you are (the larger you appear, the more likely you are to be asked questions) they can prevent you from boarding

Regarding arranging a spot in a private hospital, if you are planning to do this in HK and are already 30 weeks along, the chances of your finding any private hospital here with a spot are almost none, unless you already have a confirmed booking.

Dear ELE

Many many thanks for your kind info, much appreciated

Our first appointment with public hospital was on 8th nov but we had to move out on 5th nov so if we can explain to hospital guys abt it do u think there wont be any problem

As doc advised to make journey more comfortable we hv booked business class and going to see doctor today evening

Ur welcome Sabasaqib...
Hope all will go well for you when you start traveling.

I really can't tell you much abt the arrangement for public and private hospital when come to delivery.. As I only goes to my private gynae for prenatal care. But I do agree that you shd start calling up the public hospital to check.. Or maybe even get in contact with some private gynaes as I know a lot of gynaes are pretty full.

Oh and like what Elle said pls ensure that u carry ur HK Id with you as the immigration has the right to stop you from entering as you are pregnant. :)

The public hospital guys are not too fussed about people missing appointments but seem to insist on at least ONE before you deliver at a public hospital if you want to go straight to the delivery suite/maternity ward instead of Emergency. So if you can make it back to have that one appointment before you deliver it should be fine. What I was told by my MCH at Hang Hau is that if I choose to skip an appointment at the MCH, no need to call or anything to reschedule. They have their antenatal checks on one day of the week (Tuesday) so I should just turn up on a Tuesday with the old appointment slip. If you're appointments are at United Christian, the policy may be a little different but I don't think they will have a big problem with you having missed your appointment, as long as you get in an appointment before you go into labour - I think the rationale is to review your medical history etc. so the midwives and doctors are prepped when you go into labour. Take all your tests/scans/records from your private appointments and show them at your public appointments. They want as full a picture as they can get of your medical history.

Hi Ladies

I reached safely last Saturday and no body bothered to ask me abt pregnancy

We have new appointment on third january and they asked me to bring the sample of urine

So now i hope all nightmares r going away one by one but the last one stil remains will i get a good doctor at the time of delivery at united christian hospital

Saba, Glad to hear you had no problems getting another appointment. When are you due? I delivered at United Christian last year so feel free to ask if you have specific questions.

If you have an uncomplicated delivery, it will be handled mostly by midwives with the doctor popping in only very irregularly. I have to say I was not pleased with the doctor when she did make an appearance. However, the midwives were great, experienced and very supportive.

If we believe doctors one doc said to be on third feb and second said 10 feb. So far i have had great pregnancy period with no complications at all
All the tech who did ultrasounds found everything perfectly alright. Baby is growing perfectly inside. Dic also said that chances are bright for a normal delivery since my height is ideal for normal delivery
I dont know if it matters or not

My mom in law ll join me on 23rd Dec and will remain with me till march

I would like to know from u very basic things that when i am due which ward or where i need to go
Do they operate 24 hours
What if doc is not available or she or he is day off

These silly thoughts r still with me and i know these r stupid :) but this is first pregnancy and me and my hubby are uite young 24 and 26 respectively but he always tries to calm me that thiusands of women deliver every month they do not go to mars
All get operated here but i cannot stop thinking

?I would like to know from u very basic things that when i am due which ward or where i need to go.?

Ok, as far as I remember, when you are in labour, for United Christian, you go to the Main/General building and take the lift up to the labour ward/delivery suite on the second floor. (You can confirm this at your appointment? ie ? name of building and floor to go up to ) Basically, you exit the lift, turn left and turn right (following the board pointing to ?delivery suite?). You will come to a closed door next to which is a sensor ? you wave your hand in front of the sensor and the door opens (I?m saying all this because I was a little confused the first time). This will lead you to a waiting area with a few couches, and in front of you will be another closed door with a bell/buzzer and intercom. Press it and say you are in labour. A nurse will let you in. At this stage, your husband will be asked to wait outside.

I suggest you make a trip to UCH and find the ward, go into waiting room etc. at least at end Jan. Or if your appointment is at UCH, just go up to the ward. The doors and sensor can be a little confusing so might as well figure out the process before you?re actually in labour.

Around your 36th week, the nurses at your antenatal appointment will probably give you an envelope with your medical records which you need to take with you when you go into labour and give it to the nurse at the delivery suite. This envelope will have the details of the building number and floor number. If you antenatal appointment is in UCH itself, maybe they already have your records and don?t need you to carry them so it may be a little different.

The nurse will ask you some questions ? I was asked about allergies, medical history (weird, because shouldn?t it have been on the record?) and was also asked to sign something that said I was ok if they performed an episiotomy etc. Please think about whether you are ok with an episiotomy ? you can refuse if you are not. Also, if you want your husband in the delivery room with you ? I strongly urge you to have him with you ? you can say so, and keep a copy of your husband?s ID card with you.

Then they took me to an area with beds and hooked me up to a monitor to determine if I was in active labour. My water had not broken at this stage. A doctor was called in to examine me ? be prepared for this cervical exam, it is quite painful and in my case, the doctor gave no explanation of what she was about to do. I suggest you speak slowly and clearly. They have this impression that South Asians don?t speak English and are thus a little strange initially but once thye realize you are easy to communicate with it?s all ok.

They decided I should be admitted to the antenatal ward which is on the third floor. So I was put in a wheelchair and taken up there. You?ll have to say bye to your husband then. When your contractions are very regular and spaced close together, they?ll bring you down again to a private room. While they are doing this, they?ll ask you to call your husband if you want him there. So make sure your mobile phone is charged ? they don?t let you charge your phone in the ward.

This is how it was for me. If you?re ready to give birth when you go in there, they might not send you up to the ward at all.

Also, at your antenatal appointment they will give you a list of stuff you need to bring with you to the hospital. Around your 36th week, get this stuff together and pack it in a bag. Don?t make the bag too big or it might not fit in the locker in the ward. One thing on that list that is a little hard to find but that they insist on ? maternity pads that can be tied with string. These can be bought in the 7/11 in the same building as the labour ward. I suggest you ask the nurse to write the Chinese word for these pads; even in the 7/11 they?re hard to find and if you need to ask the sales person, they won?t understand what you?re saying in English.

Do they operate 24 hours

Yes, they operate 24 hours. Yes, there is a doctor on call ALWAYS. They work in shifts ? there is always a doctor there, don?t worry. Also, the midwives and nurses are very good. Don?t be upset if it is mostly them at your delivery. Be happy. It means your delivery is smooth and uncomplicated.

Your husband is right, there is not need to worry so much. But this is a new experience so of course you will worry. My strategy was to just not think about it too much. Believe me, your body knows what to do.

Dear Charade
