Acupunture for infertility ..need help

I just signed up with GeoBaby as my wife got pregnant last Nov. This is the first few topics I clicked. I will share our experience since we also have acupuncture and infertility treatment recently.

We visited our chinese doc regularly for the last few years for general health boost and stress relief. We are now his friends to go out for dinners as well as patients at his clinics.

According to him, we could expect a reasonable chance despite all the odds. A few years back he said once its a non-sense to relate us to infertility unless there are hard evidence from modern medical check that my wife's body was unusal. But when we approached gynecologists for checkings and advice back in those years, we were told our age group was not to feel optimistic. During the process things were not going smooth and hopes were diminishing. Those scientific infertility treatments were very difficult to her and caused complications. By the time she was pregnant, we were already over 40.

Chinese doctor said a good about-to-be mum should be red and rozy. Pulse should be stable and confident. My wife always suffers from alarmingly low blood pressure and very thin red blood counts. Annual body checks were showing some arming points that flag us to keep reviewing the next year and advise us to consult GP if deteriorate. Her long hour and very stressful job was also not helping her body to grow stronger. She was totally lacking those favourable body conditions from a chinese doctors perspective.

We only started a targeted chinese doc treatment for a few months after our first IUI. We were skeptical about chinese medicines and doc while we have infertility treatments to avoid conflicts until our first IUI. That IUI attempt involved very high dosage of injections as gynecologist found my wife very weak in blood test reports. She was devastated both physically and mentally after that failed IUI. We brought this up to our chinese doc and he kind of put us on an intensive program. We took chinese medicines together with frequent acupuncture treatment. There were also some heat treatments and message treatments. I believe chinese medicines gave us an extra boost to turn her rosy. And her annual health check also shown some better than last year results. Just 3+ months into the chinese doc program our gynecologists says the conditions for a second IUI was right. Blood test results were so nice that our gynecologist was showing a good smile on his face there after. Our second IUI injection dosage was much smaller, we were told it was already enough for her at that body condition. We kind of abruptly stopped taking herbals, and then we were lucky. The role of those "indigenous" medicines in our case may be worth noting. May be its also the accumulated boost from our many chinese doc sessions during the last few years.

One more thing I want to share is the prices quoted on line and in this thread are very high when comparing to mine. Although our annual spending with chinese doctor might be more than those figures mentioned here and we are paying concession rates as friends. Anyway our per session costs are significantly lower. Our targeted treatment does not cost us more than our usual session. Prescriptions cost quite some money but those are related to "indigenous" items we purchased from herbal shops. And I think chinese doctor sessions may need to be regular and be maintained for quite sometime to show their full potential in boosting one's body and the chances of pregnancy. Or may be its my wife's conditions were critical and complicated. We cannot tell for sure but just some tough experience to share with anyone that may find it useful.

I went to see Dr CK Sum for about a year before I got pregnant. We had been trying for almost 4 years. I had 1 failed IUI and 2 failed IVF's before becoming pregnant with the 3rd IVF. Dr. Sum is awesome. He does his acupuncture and moxibustion ALONGSIDE western treatments like IUI and IVF. They are time sync'ed. He and his team is sometimes more knowledgeable than the nurses at my fertility clinic (I was at Union Hospital, with Dr. Tung Hiu Fong). He knew my OB's style well, and even when Dr. Tung might tell me one thing Dr. Sum would tell me what he thought she REALLY meant. He's quite busy and need to book maybe a week in advance. He doesn't mind people calling him for advice anytime in between appointments. When I got pregnant he actually turned me away for wanting to see him for advice, and said just call him anytime with questions, because he didn't want to give me any meds during pregnancy anyway. =) Oh one thing I love is that his meds comes in powder form so just mix with hot water to drink. Awesome for me because I traveled a lot for work and hated having to check in bags due to liquid form meds all the time.

Hi there,
Just saw this post. I am seeing CK Sum now and I like him. Cheaper than Troy and he is specialised in fertility. He has patients going through IUI and IVF. He is v busy and need to book 2 weeks in advance. GL x

Hi PooBear,
May I ask if Dr Sum put needles in your belly? I just get nervous about it when I'm ttc but he said it's fine, even when I am doing IUI. Congrats on your pg, how old is your baby now? : )

Hi all, my dh and I have ttc for 6 cycles and no success by far. We are thinking of going to consult dr sum , just wondering if we will need to see a western doc before that to ensure eggs/sperms etc are ok? Pls advise? And also if any one 's got success with dr sum?

If you are older than 30 then I suggest you go to your OBGYN and ask for testing. It will tell you for sure if there is a problem or not. I wish I had done this earlier. 6 months is not a long time but if you are worried, it will be more cost effective to go to a western doctor.

I have tried acupuncture with 'Doctor' Sum and in my experience he is more interested in money than people. I found acupuncture very relaxing but that's about it. If you have a male factor issue (such as low sperm count) then acupuncture won't help in the slightest.

Good luck!

Hi

I am 18 weeks pregnant and had been trying for around a year, I had 2 miscarriages.

I had an appointment with Troy Sing but I had a couple of issues with him. He did my consultation then left a colleague to do the needles, but I was charged for his full fee. Also his schedule was very inflexible for me as I work full time.

So I saw another doctor in the same practice (Healthwise is the practice) who previously treated me for insomnia some years back, Dr Hui. He's is excellent and can highly recommend him. I was able to have my appointments on a Saturday morning so no rushing to and from work, I was very relaxed and I think that helped a great deal.

It may have been the accupunture that helped me get pregnant or it may not have been but I stopped counting the days of my cycle and let Dr Hui do his thing...and made sure i finished my herbs :-)

I've been trying to get pregnant and had several attempts with IVF. I heard that acupuncture is a great complimentary tool, so I went to Balance Health in Central and saw Dr Grace Yu. She is really good at what she does - I felt so good after her sessions and finally it worked!

Hi, I have done 2 iui and 1 fresh Ivf and 2 frozen transfers.....all of which have ended up negative.
I have done acupuncture with my ivf and while it's relaxing the needles make me a little tense....I am not sure if it works but I go to Dr Helen he t London medical clinic....she is really lovely and sympathetic (to the point where I think she may cry when my result is negative).

I have a question for others.....are there any support groups in hk people are aware of? In the UK I knew there were some, but since getting to Hong Kong I feel like I need to speak with people who understand my struggle.....

Hi Everyone.
I went to see CK Sum back in October last year and after 3 times of going, i got pregnant (after trying for 6 months or so) I didn't continue my treatments with him and unfortunately i miscarried this year in Feb 2015. I am now pregnant again (4 half weeks) and went back to DR CK sum to help with this pregnancy and hoping that this pregnancy will be a positive one! As stated in some posts on this thread, he doesn't talk to you too much but checks your pulse, looks at your tongue, asks many questions and then advises on the answers you give. I was in a super stressful job last year and this year i am just studying and doing voluntary work so my lifestyle has changed a lot. I do believe accupuncture does work and i do highly recommend Dr CK Sum from TCM Health and Joy.

Hi Monste,
How long have you been doing accupuncture for? i would recommend CK Sum (whom i have talked about in my post) as he does specialise in fertility.

Good luck!

Hi....I've been doing acupuncture since beginning of the year. I like the lady I see but not sure if she specialises in fertility. What points did ck sum focus on for u.....

Hope your pregnancy is going well

Hi Monste,
Thanks for your message, CK focused on some points on my head and in the middle of my forehead, also focusing on some points on my arms and legs (around the calves) he also used moxibustion as well and i was given chinese meds and also moxi to do at home. What about you? I am going for my 6 1/2 week scan next week. How far along are u? x
