Hi there,
Has anyone experienced this:
baby screams and cries in lots of pain EVERYTIME when he passes stool? Even when the stool is soft!

my son is already 8 months old, and he was on breastmilk exclusively until 6 months old. Ever since he started on solids, he gets constipated every now and then and we had to give him lactulose. We've tried everything-giving him more water, avoiding BRAT, massaging his tummy, moving his legs in bike-riding motion, giving him warm bath..etcetc.. but he still gets constipated every other week.

And of course he screams and cries when he passes hard stool when constipated..but starting from last week, he screams and cries so loud even when passing soft stool on good days! he screams so loud like he is in intense pain... He is otherwise a very happy baby who gains weight, and is alert and playful .

Has anyone had similar experience? should i take him to a doctor again? I took him to the doctor for the first time 2 months ago when he experienced constipation for the first time.. all the doctor said was "constipation" and gave him lactulose, and advised us to give him lots of water...

Any advice will be useful! thanks alot!

My daughter is the same. She's also 8 months and we've been avoiding BRAT as well. I mostly feed her things like prunes and pears, and switched her completely to oat instead of rice cereal. If I give her something like carrot or broccoli, I mix in a teaspoon or two of oat bran so she has a bit more fibre. It took probably 3 weeks of that kind of diet for it to clear up. Babies can learn to associate pooping with pain so they hold it in for longer - which actually then draws more water out and makes their poo even harder!

I have read though that giving extra water doesn't really do much except for making them pee more - it's a completely different system... but then other places say that it's important. Personally I think that it MAY be important IF they are dehydrated, but drinking extra water probably won't do a lot...

i heard doc say giving more more more water too. oat and cereal is not easy to digest. and even some milk powder.

the only natural choice is to give them water. and eat more liquid then solid food. but all babies are different so try to check with food cause bb to consptip.

My daughter suffered from constipation when an infant and the doctor recommended putting a little prune juice, 1-2 tbs., in a bottle with expressed milk.

She also recommended infant suppositories, but warned against using them too often as the body can become dependent on them, as well as any laxative for that matter. Honestly, I think the suppositories simply serve to stimulate the bowls and I think any stimulation, ie. thermometer or massage, would have the same effect.

Good luck. Poor little guy.

Hi

My gal who is 17 month old always had poor digestive system.. She only poo once in 2 days.. So I always monitor her food intake which helps her to do her poo more regularly. For my gal if I start letting her have pear ( the Chinese pear yellow in color) then she will hv no prob at all. So i try to give her pear at least twice a week.. N afterwhich i alternate w other fruits like apple, banana. I think bb are like adults different ppl need different food to help in constipation; ie whilst prune is very good in solving constipation prob but it is definately not working for me. So it is impt that you observe what is best for ur bb :)

And I also give her Bb fruit juice fr gerber or Heinz. Apple n prune juice is the best bet.

Of coz like everyone said water is essential but i make sure I gave warm water to her as it is better n easier for her body to absorb (in Chinese med perspective) .

Hope this help!

Flax seed oil over mineral oil. My son now 5 was same with his bm. I mixed in flaxseed oil in his food. I started out with a drop or two mixed in food. I also switched to cooking with coconut oil 3 years ago and it made a big difference. But you do have to get used to the acquired taste.
Now I am testing out hemp fiber.
