17-month old managing to "jump" out of crib

Hi,

My daughter is almost 18 months old and surprised us today by managing to literally "jump" out of her crib. I didn't witness the event, just heard a large thump over the monitor only to find her standing in front of me on the floor screaming.

I talked to the pediatrician, who advised me to get her a small bed or put a mattress on the floor in the mean time.

Not sure, whether a bed is such a good idea at this age.

Any tips???

my son moved to a "real" bed at 12 months... we kept the matress from the cot and put it under the bed. we pull it out at night. he's only ever fallen out of bed once in the past 5 months. (he's almost 18 months too!)...

the biggest problem i have with it is that he can get out of bed himself now. so we put a baby gate across his doorway. this way he can't get into any trouble if we are asleep.

it's really up to you, but one of my biggest worries was him climbing/jumping out of a cot... he's a real monkey and would have started that around 14 months if i'd left him in a cot (he was already trying at a year old)

we moved our toddler to the bed at 21 months. We needed the crib for the baby. I would have moved him earlier if he could get out, but thankfully never figured it out. We bought a twin bed and put only the matress on the floor, then when he was taller we put the box spring under, and when he gets bigger will put the frame under it. He couldn't open door knobs yet so that was not an issue, and when he did learn how, we put door knob covers over then so he can't open the door. He still hasn't figured out those (he is 2.5 now) He stayed in bed really well the first few weeks, then started getting out, so t=hat tkko a bit of time to get him to stay in bed, but he did learn.

get cotbed instead of cot

I have heard alot of baby from around 16-17 months onwards jump off from the cot. Is pretty dangerous!

That was why we bought cotbed for our daugher. Cotbed is different from cot, it is much bigger and the rail is much higher than cot. It has a 3 position mattress base and easily converted to a junior bed. It is suitable for up to age 6 to 7 years.

Thanks for your replies. I wasn't aware, that this is a common problem. My mother, for example, thinks, that an 18-month old still belongs in a crib and is too young to go into a toddler bed.

I will definitely look at toddler beds and cotbeds now.
My husband and I are always storming into her room as soon as she cries heavily in fear, that she will try jumping out again.

Any tips on where I can get either beds?

I was thinking about going to bumps to babes to take a look. Do you know of any other places you can recommend, that produce safe merchandise?

we just bought a regular bed from ikea (actually we bought a bunk bed). he sleeps in the bottom bunk and we use the top for storage.

eventually, he'll move up to the top and the new baby will go into the bottom bunk... but that's a few years off still...
