hubby and i will be celebrating our 10th anniversary early next year.

i would like to start saving so that i can surprise him with a short getaway. although it will be our anniversary, i know he wouldn't want to go away without the kids.

a couple of our requirements:
1) won't break the bank
2) kid-friendly (they'll be 5 & 3 by then)
3) will either go at the end of march or in may, so decent weather. i'm not into hk summer type weather, so even if it's cooler, that's ok.
4) hubby and i both like "doing stuff", so 10 days laying on the beach is not our idea of fun... maybe a day or so, but not everyday.
5) the kids LOVE wildlife, so ideally someplace that would have some to see.
6) i'm looking at about 10 days away...so, someplace within about 4-5 hour flight, i'd think... don't want to spend the entire time on a plane or recovering from jetlag.

places we've already been:
thailand (phuket)
Kota kinabalu
china (beijing, shanghai)
vietname (i have, not him)

not to say i wouldn't consider those again.

if you have any suggestions, including hotels or areas to look for hotels, i'd really appreciate it!

you ladies are always so helpful, i know you'll be able to do it again!
thanks!

What about Sanya, Hainan? I dunno whether there are a lot of sights, but assumed there should be a few (unfortunately we did not venture from our resort). But the resort (we stayed at Ritz Carlton with 2 kids and inlaws) was great, beach was fab and holiday is cheap compared to others of the same standard, and the flight's only 1 hour 20 min.

thanks, i'll have a look at it.
do you think there would be enough to keep us occupied for 10-12 days?

How about Thailand, but not Phuket? A few days in BKK, up to Chiang Mai - northern Thailand is awesome.
Thailand is very budget friendly, especially out of the islands and tourist areas, and they treat children like gold. However, March-May would be pretty hot. Most places in SE Asia actually will be stinking hot then since it`s getting into the rainy season.
I went to Sanya last year. I wouldn`t go there again, especially for 10 days and with kids. There`s not much to offer, in my opinion.
How about Bali?

my hubby is chinese and after the riots against chinese in indonesia about 10 years ago, my hubby refuses to go there... ever. (no matter how hard i try...)

maybe i'll give thailand another look...

On the subject of Thailand, try going further up to Chiang Rai: the countryside is nice, the town is smaller than Chiang Mai but with some nice hotels. There are elephants and mountain ponies for the children!

all the places i've come up with are further afield... i'm now thinking, maybe a shorter trip so we can go to canada at a later date...

If you are interested by Thailand and want your kids to be occupied and happy, you can go to a Club Mediterrannee. They are great to take care of the kids from morning to evening ! There is one in Phuket. I found the site in French but you should be able to find it in English easily.
They have a few other ones around, in Malaysia, Japan...

Phuket - Tha?lande - Club Med

club med...hmmm... i never thought i'd be a club med kinda gal, but i'll definitely have a look at it! thanks!
