10 month old coughing in the early morning

Hi,
Since recovering from a cold my baby continues to have a bad early morning cough (for over 2 months now). She does not cough at any other time of the day. It wakes the household every morning anywhere between 4-5.30am. She goes back to sleep by herself but it's bothering me as it won't go away. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
According to my dr. this could be a sign of the onset of asthma. Does asthma run in your family?
 
My daughter's been doing that and she has no other symptoms in the day time. Our doctor said that kind of cough is often allergies and when it gets bad (it goes in cycles), we give her some medicine for "allergic cough" - it seems to help, I think... We just give it to her for a couple of days before bed and then she stops for a week or two... then if she starts again, I just give her the medicine for a few more days again... My mum said I was the same when I was that age, maybe it's hereditary. My husband is asthmatic as well...
 
Thanks for your reply. There is no family history of asthma or allergies. Can you please tell me which medication it is that you use with your child?
