When I was pregnant, a lot of Chinese (I'd say over 90%) including strangers could tell I was carrying a boy just from the shape of my belly. So I'm starting this thread as an unofficial survey to find out if this Chinese way of telling genders really work.

The myth goes like this:

1) if you belly is pointed (usually also mean people can still see a waist from behind) you are carrying a boy

2) if your belly is rounded and your waist is thick you are carrying a girl

My belly last time was round and I had a girl.

This time, it is also round but you cannot tell from the back that I am pregnant. Many older Chinese have commented that I am carrying a boy, but I am carrying a girl (99.9% sure).

For both my pregnancies EVERYONE said by my shape I ws carrying boys. I was even convinced that I was! BUT I have two wonderfull GIRLS! They were wrong for me both times!

This is interesting because in the US, they say that if you're carrying the baby weight all around then it's a boy, but if it's mostly in the front then it's a girl. But in the US there are many different body types, whereas here in China there aren't. Anyway, I carried mostly in front yet had a boy.

I wouldn't say this is a Chinese thing. This talk goes around all my Swedish friends as well although it is not exactly accurate all the time but most women I know with round bellies have had daughters and most with pointed ones have had sons... My helper just told me that she's convinced I'm carrying at least one girl (expecting twins) even though I haven't even started growing yet.... Well well, time will tell!

with my first daughter I carried all around, with my second daughter, I was all out front. All the Chinese people we met (dh's relatives, friends at church, moms at the playground etc) all said we were having a boy.

When I was carrying my third child almost everyone told me I was expecting a girl. Then about a week before he was born my husband came up behind me and whispered in my ear that the baby had changed sex as the bump was looking very different now. And a week later we had a baby boy.

With both my pregnancies, the bump was all at the front and almost everyone guessed right. Two boys! Based on my pregnancy body shape, I was totally convinced that a lady I met recently was going to have another boy. So imagine my surprise when she ended up having a girl.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and I've always carried upfront (cannot tell that I'm pregnant from behind). I have a girl and a boy, have no idea what this one is. Think it's just the way that my body is programmed.

Everyone I met said that I was carrying a boy based on the shape, but the scan revealed that it's a girl. And it's a girl! This time round, nobody believes that it's a girl as it's even more pointed now.... However, the scan also said that it will be a girl..... so I guess it's not all that true afterall...

Hi!

I have found out on Monday we have 90% proability of having a boy. This is definitely a different pregnancy from with my daughter: and I definitely have a round and more pointed belly!!!

xxxx

Indians say that when u are carrying a girl u become very fair and beautiful and rounded all over, alot of swelling . When it is boy u dont show much, smaller belly

Well, another thing i found out is that...if you like to eat Spicy..then you're carrying a boy, and if you like to eat sour...then you're carrying a girl.

No one could tell I was pregnant from behind, bump was all in front... lots of chinese people told me I was having a boy. My husband prided himself in having guessed correctly the gender of all our friends babies and he thought we were having a boy.I had a girl!!!!!!!

Currently 21 weeks pregnant, found out it's a boy. Belly is like a basketball attached to my body (I think that's what people mean by pointy?), still skinny legs and arms, still have a waist, can't tell I'm pregnant if you look from behind.

I had the basketball-attached-to the body that Soon2bmom mentions--my belly was quite pointed--stuck straight out there...and....I had a boy.

I know I'm having a boy, and I'm sticking straight out, instead of at the sides.
I also heard that if you're having a boy, you look more beautiful during your pregnancy, nice nails, shiny hair, etc. If you're having a girl, the opposite, because supposedly your baby girl is taking all your beauty from you:)
