Due Date in July - September 08

Also to repeat what has been added to another post- Dr Dawkins is leaving HK in July. Am sure he is currently telling new patients that.

Hi Rachrobin,

We live in DB and use Apple Travel to book our flights with. I'm flyng to KL on Thurs for work and then heading with hubby to the west coast to a marina development called Port Dickson for the weekend, we have an appartment there. Hubby had it from before we married so first time for me to go there.

Not sure if there are other Apple Travel's around, but I have found them good. Cant't wait to get out of winter clothes and feel some sun!

Yes he is telling all his new patients that but I have been really thrilled with his care and am happy to work with his replacement unless you have any other suggestions that you think might be better? I am booked into the Matilda so they would have to work out of there.

I don't think there should be any problems with Dr Dawkins' replacement who I don't know personally, although my Mum does!
I know he is an obstetrician with many yrs exprience in HK, in the govt. sector. I went to school with his children. And that's all I know!!

anyone taken any chinese herbs called the '13 tai pou'? heard it is good for 'safety ' of the fetus.
need some advice.
also, as i started this 2nd trimester, able to sleep throught the night without going to toilet.. yahoo!!!!
but still vomitting and feeling nausea.. :(

We've just booked a week in Koh Samui, can't wait. It seemed like a good choice - only a 3 hour flight and close to an international hospital. Fresh air is something I've been craving!!
I have already finished work (a long story) so have a lot of time on my hands. My husband works 10am - 11pm (he's a chef) so I'm getting pretty bored and a touch lonely now - the novelty has worn off!!
Anyone have any suggestions of what to do out and about (that doesn't involve a shopping mall or market!!) ??

Hi everyone,

kiwi mum,

if there will be any tea breaks, let me know. i would love to join.
however, i am a full time working mom, only ok on wkdays or sat.

Well back from M'sia safe and sound but had a little drama there. I missed the last step on a flight of stairs and fell, landed on my hands and knees but my arms gave way and fell onto my stomach!! Felt a sharp pain and was inconsolable for a couple of hours until I felt the little one kick me. Felt soooooo relieved. Then that evening hardly felt her move at all so became worried all over again, but she is back and stronger than ever now! Phew!!

Hubby was really good, especially as all I could manage to say through the tears was that I was ok but had landed on my stomach. We were close to a private hospital so felt reassured by that, but decided not to go as could still feel her moving around.

Was really quite scary though and I was glad that we were near good hospitals.

Reei - keep an eye on your feet whilst you are on holiday!!

Other than that the break was good and am thinking about going back in a month to stock up on baby items as they are much cheaper there (hubby wont let me buy anything yet, he says it is bad luck....)

I'm planning to breastfeed too, have read some of the threads from Sarah from LLL and might sign up for a few meetings or even their antenatal classes.

How are the rest of you? I'm starting to look pregnant now, although am sure a lot of people just think I have a fat tummy!!

hi, how are u all doing?
shoni, hope u r perfectly okay now. got a shock reading your msg. will sure be careful when i go hangzhou..
prenatal dvd i bought is really good. did half an hour yesterday and able to sleep quite well.
starting to feel a bit scared. wonder if i will be a good mum. hope i'll be. part of me, do not feel so ready yet..

Hi new here

Hi Gals
I am due 11th Sept, wondering if anyone has any idea where to go for a detailed 20 weeks ultrascan?
I am currently with United Christain hosipital but was hoping to do a private scan for 20 weeks as this is important milestone plus docs at gov hospital really answers questions to minimum...

another reason is I had a high risk for OSCAR earlier but just did an amnio with normal results, whew!! reason for my high risk was a very low level of PAPP-A level which I read from internet predicts poor birth outcomes, so just wanted to put my mind at rest if I am able to check that with a good private doc as well,

anyway nice to meet everyone!

Hi Yuukalim,

I am going through the public system but I've had my scans privately so far.
We went the the HK Prenatal Diagnosis Centre, which is on 2nd Floor, St Georges Building (Icehouse St) in Central. PH. 2877 3280. You see either Dr Macor Wan or Dr Lam Yung Hang - both have good reputations for all testing and scans. You also get printed photos of the scans and a DVD to take home. Each scan I had (including the 20 week one) cost about HKD1200. They can also write you a report of their observations for you to give to the public clinic to include in your medical file.

It is a busy clinic - you may have to wait a couple of weeks to get an appointment....

Good luck!

Hi,

I am due on September 13th and will move to Hong Kong at the end of June. Will be living in Olympic. Are there any mummies there too and can someone give me some good advice on dr and hospital as I am used to the Dutch health system where everything is automatically arranged for you ... I guess Hong Kong means you have to arrange everything by yourself. It is my second by the way. The first one will turn 3 by the end of this month.

New to Hk Info

Hi Kairo & Dreamer,

Congratulations and welcome.

I believe that in your situation you will need to go through the HK public hospital system. From what I understand, the private hospitals are booked out months in advance. I was pressured into booking no later than 9 weeks into my pregnancy (you can go on a waiting list though). I chose to go through the public system in the end, having my first few scans and antenatal classes privately.

You can, however, see a private doctor for antenatal care, scans etc. and then deliver in a public hospital. I would reccommend you arrange appointments before you land in HK, as it can take a few weeks to get in to see a doctor if you are a new patient. Other than my previous post, I can't reccommend any - maybe some of the other ladies here can.......

If your company has an HR department, I would reccommend asking them to help you get sorted from the start. You will need an HK ID card to use the public system, or you can pay a package price to deliver your baby (which is currently HKD39,000) as a non-resident. Getting an HK ID all depends on your working/dependant visa status and that is where the HR dept should be able to help.
You need to register at the nearest public hospital to where you live. They will require you to attend antenatal appointments at least twice before you deliver, even if you are seeing a private doctor.

Make sure you bring all of your up to date records from home with you, the hospital will assess you and plan the remainder of your antenatal care. All staff in public hospitals speak English, and of course, some better than others. The style of care is very rudimentary (you even need to bring your own cup with you!), there is certainly no pampering or bells & whistles. The equipment and neonatal care is 1st grade though. The Queen Mary Hospital (on HK Island) has a very good reputation. If you have complications with a private hospital birth they end up sending you to Queen Mary anyway!

I found the whole process very daunting at the start. I was only in HK 2 months before I found out I was pregnant. I found the Annerley midwives (advertised on this site) really helpful and they offered some reassurance.

Good luck with everything!
