Really, the food ended up in his high chair seat, but "plate" was the closest to the answer. And I guess I assumed by "learning" you meant when it first started happening.
 
Today my 9.5 month old sons dinner of noodles ended up in his mouth, his hair, on his arms, legs, face, in his highchair seat and a certain amount in our dogs tummies. They now sit right under his highchair when it's time to eat because they know they are to sure to secure something good to eat!

Actually the chicken, tofu and vegetables he managed to get mainly in his mouth- it was the noodles that went elsewhere!
