Scan In Hong Kong

Hi All,

I am 22 weeks now and have been going regularly to the public hospital for check ups. I have heard there is a scan at 20 weeks to check if the baby is growing fine,. This was not done at the public hospital and i am worried now.. I was recommended Dr Eric Lee by a friend and also Dr. Patrick Chan. I have no idea about them. Shelling out money for scans is not a problem. Just that, How often should i be taking these scans and are there any other important things that the public hospital here dont perform? Or is it just fine to go for 3D/4D scan ones..

The public hospitals should have had a notice up, or you should have been advised, to get the 20 week scan done privately. That's what happened in my case. You can still get one done...though you're a bit along.

It's not necessary to do scans during pregnancy. the 11-13 week Down's Scan is to check for that specific purpose and the 20 one is usually a detailed one done by a specialist (some regular obgyns cannot do it) to measure the baby's organs. In mine (done privately), one of my baby's kidneys showed up slightly dilated. Once I told the public hospital of that result they arranged follow-up scans in their system for me. They will arrange scans for you if they think you need it.

I get the feeling that most private doctors do scans at every visit because patients like it and they get to charge for it, not that its recommended medical practice. I liked getting scans because it let me see my baby. I chose to have far fewer scans for my second baby than for my first.

Let me share with you my experience. It's my first pregnancy as well.

While I have complete faith and trust in the public hospital system here, I sill opted to have regular check ups with a private doctor.

The reason being (as charade said) the public hospital will assign you the necessary services as deemed appropriate. However, I think that it is odd that the hospital has not alerted you that you have to do the scans elsewhere! How outrageous. My public hospital did give me a heads up to get the structural scan done elsewhere. And my private doctor had already foreseen that, so I had taken my private doctors' form and arranged it myself within the specified date that the scan was supposed to happen.

I am at qe. And Bc I'm a low risk mom, they have now placed me in a maternal health care clinic for the subsequent check ups. Though I'm perfectly healthy I still think there is a small chance that things can go wrong. And it's better to closely monitor and be safe than sorry.

In my monthly visits to the private doctor he monitors the structural growth of the bb head, arms, legs…etc, placenta size, bb weight and heartbeat to make sure that everything is on track.

I agree with charade that it might not be necessary to scan every month but it does work to give me peace of mind. I would say the decision is half rational and half emotional.

Do u feel the bb moving? I can also recommend u my doctor. He is good.

I'm at UCH and i was given a letter when I registered that said they only do scans for high risk pregnancies due to budget issues. As I'm 35 I'm classified as high risk so I've had my 12 week nt scan and I'm due to have my 20 week anatomy scan in a few weeks.

I'm also seeing a private ob but she wants to do a scan every appt and I'd rather avoid unnecessary ones.
 
Thank you all. Yes, I wasn't told about these scans in my public visit. Surprised how they never thought of informing. May be i was ignorant.. I have booked my appt with the prenatal diagnostic center for tuesday now after a brief research. If everything goes well i might continue going there regularly until delivary .. But i am assuming at 23 weeks it should show us some clear picture about the baby's growth and development as compared to later stage.. could anyone please recommend a good ob/gyn for private check ups.. Or any suggestions abt dr eric lee/ patrick chan??

Yes i do feel the baby move..like a gentle flutter or a bubble inside my tummy as mentioned in the books:)
