Helper and length of contract

We've decided that we're going to hire a FDH, but there is the possibility that we will only be in HK for another 10 months or so. Knowing that the contracts you take out are 2 years, how would this work? Do we have to show my husbands contract when all the paperwork is submitted and would they reject our application?

Is it unfair to the helper to know that we could only be here for 10 months, or would some happily take a role this length (with the possibility it will be longer)? All a first for us, so not really sure of the correct etiquette.

Definitely let your helper (or those you are interviewing) know that the position is for 10 months - it only seems fair.

Since the contract is for two years, when you leave HK you will submit a letter to immigration explaining that it is being terminated early due to your relocation, which makes things easier for your helper to transfer to a new job.

I didn't have to show my employment contract when I hired our helper - just got a letter confirming my employment and showing my salary on office letterhead.

i have friends who were in the same position. when they found a helper that they liked, they told her what was happening and arranged to pay her a few months extra to cover her "hardship". she was quite happy with that arrangement

Also, its quite common for companies to extend contracts, so your 10 months may actually become 2 years too.

This is a very common story you will hear all over Hong Kong.
For me, I came to Hong Kong on a 3 month short contract which got exended and extended and extended. 17 years later, I'm still here.

Thanks, yes, we're already on an extension from the original contract so not sure it will be extended again. But we shall see!
