Go Back to home country for birth

Hi Ladies,

I am still considering whether I should go back to Singapore to give birth of my first baby. Does anyone have the same experience that can share with me? I am really puzzle now. If I really want to go back and give birth, which month should I go back?

i am preg with my 2nd baby and am going back to sg to birth sometime around 32 weeks. u have to check with the airlines whether they will fly you back. SIA and UA accept right up to 36 weeks i think. but i am going back earlier as my 1st born wanted to see the world at 37 weeks :)

I kinda recall reading SIA's website that they accept pregnant women up to 32 weeks but you will need a letter from your doctor to say that you are fit to fly. If this is your first baby, then I would suggest that you go back to deliver. The hospital system here (both private and public) is a very far cry to what Singapore has to offer.
 
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why you would go back to give birth rather than have it in HK? I assume it's financially related.....

The cut off for most airlines is 34 weeks, but you should always have a note from your doctor saying you are fit to fly dated as close to your departure date as possible. I flew back to the states at 27 weeks and returned at 32 weeks. I got a check up the the day before I flew out at 32 weeks and had my OB sign a note. I definitely needed a note and in some cases the airlines has you sign an indemnity note too.
 
Hi, I am always thinking of deliver my baby in pvt hospital, but it would be at least HKD50K in HK (excluding the prenatal check), accordingly to my HK gyne. And it need to be book around 9th week before it is too late. The price is too steep to us. My singapore friends told me that with the govt subsidy I would need to pay around SGD3K max (and this is the price for c-section). I have quite good experience with Glen Eagle in the past for other medical issue. Last week I went to PMH to register for Down's check up for my baby, the floor is swamped with people. I have been to KK hospital before but I never see this kind of crowd before, that's why I am considering to go back. I don't know if I am over worried, we have tried for almost 3 years for this baby and I am going to 35 next year, so I think I am a bit chicken with the not so familiar hospital system in HK. really appreciate every reply and your time.
 
the public system CAN be busy, but that can be said of ANY hospital ANYWHERE. i was hospitalised 13 times over two pregnancies. there were times that the hosptial was very busy, but other times when i had a ward room (8 beds) all to myself!

May I know how long did u stay at SG after you gave birth? Is it ok to bring the new born back to HK immediately or after one month confinement? Do you all know is there any Confinement centre in SG? Thank you!

Hi pixelelf,

I am delivering at Gleneagles in Singapore in about 2 weeks - c-section. It will cost me about $8-9K SGD to deliver there with a 3 night hospital stay which I personally think is quite high. We were thought it would be around $6K. I have a confinement nanny coming to my house for 28 days. I am not sure how early you can travel with a newborn, but I assume you would not want to do it any earlier than 6 weeks...ideally 8 weeks for health reasons.
 
i delivered with tmc, private room, c sec, cost about SGD$2k+ then i think. will be going back there with the same doc, paul tseng. i did not use any confinement nannies as my dad has knowledge of such things and i had a helper back then to help out. this time round, i am also not going to use any confinement nannies and will be bringing my helper over to help around :)

i brought my first born over when he was 6 weeks. no problem.
 
FYI - the hospital stay itself if in a private room at gleneagles for 3 nights is $3,600 SGD which doesn't include your doctor's services so I would think min is $5-6K SGD at Gleaneagles.
 
also forgot to say that i took my two kids to canada (36 hours door-to-door) when my 2nd was 5 weeks old (i had a c-section, too) by myself without problems.
 
Cara, I'm considering taking my baby back to my home country after a month or so. Just wondering - how did you manage the vaccination schedule? I understand in the public system in HK they give a couple of doses at birth and the follow-up dose has to happen in a month. Also, was it easy to complete the birth registration, passport, visa for baby etc within 5 weeks?
 
regarding the passport - I think it depends on which country's passport you are getting. I got one for my daughter and it took 4 days once we filled in the forms, It was a UK passport and we just went to the consulate on the Monday afternoon and my husband picked up the passport on the friday. I think it took around three weeks before we registered her and got her birth cert so you should be OK there but just be aware that I had some issues when taking her out fo the country as I did not have time to get her the immigration sticker - they were not going to let me leave but in the end were OK with it and she re-entered HK on a visitor stamp so when I returned to hong kong we had to make a trip to Macau to validate her visa.
 
we were a bit rushed because my grandma was not doing very well. we actually hadn't even decided on a name the day we went in to register her birth! we made that decision in the office (it was either going tto be X Y, or Y X, we just hadn't figured out the order).

the registration in hk is VERY fast and efficient. for the canadian passport, it normally takes 15 working days~ 3 weeks~, but they can speed it up if you are needing to travel. i produced our tickets and we ended up getting the passport in 6 working days.

she didn't need a visa as she has ROA, but we DID need the birth certificate to travel for entry back into hk or else she gets a visitor visa in her passport, and we don't want that!

for the vaccinations, if memory serves, she had the doses at 1 month and then when we came back. it really wasn't a big deal.

all-in-all it was a little stressful, but honestly it was still relatively painless.
1) get birth cert ~ then apply for visa if needed
2) book tickets
3) apply passport ASAP, providing tickets as proof of travel to speed up the process
 
Thanks Amy and Cara. This is an Indian passport which the website says takes 10 days (I hope!). I wrote to HK immigration and they said that I should get the passport and then go to immigration and transfer some visa sticker from the birth registration on to the passport which should take one day (the transfer endorsement not the birth registration). Anyway, looks like people have done it with the vaccines too so will keep my fingers crossed that things go smoothly.
