Cow's milk? What type do you give your baby?

i know there's a lot of discussion on formula VS cow's milk, in my mind, formula costs a lot more than cow's milk, and i drink cow's milk, so am thinking about introducing cow's milk to my almost 1 year's old (thinking about weaning him off BM by then)...

Just wanted to get other moms' thoughts/ideas on good products, etc? I don't know about PURA, it seems to taste better in Australia as opposed to the HK one. I just drink regular Nestle one so was thinking of finding him a 'added calcium' version...

Also, would really appreciate any ideas on weaning babies off breastmilk and onto other milk!

actually, we worked it out and for us, formula was WAYYYYYYY cheaper. we looked at how many bottles we could get out of a can of formula and what we paid vs what fresh milk cost for the same number of servings.

the only thing i will say though is that babies & children need the FULL fat milk, not any kind of skimmed milk.

really? carang what type of formula are you using? as we were looking at some formula cans and on average they cost about 200 per can? Some of my relatives say it's normal to spend up to around 800 HKD per month on formula?

we used cow & gate. they were around $150/can, maybe $170....but our daughter LOVED it! until she was 2.5 she drank around 4-5 FULL oz bottles per day. there is no way we could allow her to drink so much if she were drinking milk. (a 1.8l jug is about $40. it would have lasted us about 1 day with her...)

our girl has always loved to eat/drink... still does, but we broke her of the milk habbit back in september.

We use Masters Milk from Australia. I don't trust the local stuff, as it must be all from China (well, I doubt there is a dairy farm in HK). Given the recent milk powder scare, the standards in the dairy industry are obviously not high enough if they are killing their own babies.

I agree with Cara, surely formula is cheaper per litre?

yes - i use trappist dairy...but I do mix between that at Pura since i don't want too much hormone from any one type of milk...who knows which one is really good, but i figure as long as there is not a high concentration within the system, it's safer. kowloon dairy is also local, the ones from nestle are made from powder imported from australia...so technically a milk drink and not really milk....

Clover organic milk (at Wellcome, 360), A Canadian organic brand at City Super and I keep long life organic in the cupboard for when we can't get fresh.

Sorry, meant to add that the above is for my 2.5 year old.

With my son we alternated breast feeds morning and night with formula via bottle during the day until this week when I stopped BF'ing completely. He's soley on formula now and I will switch him to cows milk at 1 year.

I would have kept going, but he's taken to biting me really hard so I called it a day!

my baby's also recently biting very hard... i'm trying to see if i can last until he is a year old before weaning him off BM and onto something else...

lesliefu, does your baby differentiate between the two milk? I've heard that once you give a baby a type of milk, they don't like being introduced to new ones?

I guess I need to calculate how much he'll be drinking. He doesn't drink very much pumped BM (only about 5 oz during the time i'm at work from 2-6pm) There's also the issue that with formula we'd have to learn how to mix/make it now!

we use pura masters full cream and both kids love the taste, they even like the UHT (me yuk, but each to their own).

to wean both my bubbies, I started by using it on their cereal in the mornings, and then a while later a small glass in the afternoon in place of breast.

Eventually both weaned themselves around 18mth and preferred to drink their milk out of a glass. On average they have 500-600ml of milk a day, plus yoghurt and cheese to satisfy their dietary requirement of calcium. They were also eating 5 - 6 small meals a day, and the milk was a drink rather than a meal.

Our children currently like the Paul's UHT milk from Australia. They used to drink Meiji fresh milk when we lived in Singapore, but that's so expensive here. I wait for Paul's to go on sale and buy the tri-packs by the dozen.

since babies aren't supposed to drink cow's milk until at least 1 years old, so technically i should start weaning when he turns 1? for example, by replacing 1 feeding with cow's milk per week?

would it be bad if i tried when he's around 10 or 11 months old?

yup i've seen the different articles...

I'm not ruling out formula altogether, but at this rate (baby is REALLY attached to me) I won't be able to wean until he is 1 years old, and therefore I could jump straight to milk instead of having to buy expensive formula cans where we have to learn how to mix/make them...

I do know about the lack of iron/calcium issues... sigh... actually i'm still undecided, but leaning heavily onto weaning at 1 years old so i can skip straight to cow's milk...

I'm still giving my girl (2yrs old) formular, apart from being cheaper per L.... I think there might be more 'nutritions' in them like added DHAs, various vitamins etc

Formula is really easy to make up....at least for the formula I use - one scoop formula to one oz water. Nothing really to learn.....however many oz of water you put in the bottle is however many scoops of formula you put in.

My son just turned 1 and I will probably keep him on formula for a while longer til I decide otherwise. I`m afraid of the disgusting hormone-filled regular cow`s milk (imported or not), and it`s logistically and financially difficult to go and buy organic fresh milk(he`s on organic formula now). I found tins of organic whole milk powder here, but they`re about $240 a can, same as the formula...therefore I`m in no hurry to change. Also, my son eats really well even with 3 bottles a day, so why rock the boat, is my thinking.
