Due Oct-Dec 08??

That's so funny! In Chinese tradition, they say the opposite! They say, if you're having a girl, the mother will look more beautiful, more radiant. If you're having a boy, the mother's features will change and hence look strange!!! Well, I guess one of them is right.... 50% of the time!!! :haha:

Sorry to hear about your friend Nicole... It must be difficult......

My skin on my face is SO DRY lately!! A bit of acne, but nothing MAJOR... I'm getting a bit of acne on my shoulders though! So annoying! Although at least no one can see it most of the time!!

PF - are you Chinese? My husband is Chinese, but mostly raised overseas, so he doesn't know as much about "Chinese old wives tales" and all that... They seem to vary from person to person though...

One Chinese friend told me that I shouldn't eat mango while I was pregnant because it was bad for the baby! I looked up "mango, pregnant" on google and the first link I found was some doctor recommending that pregnant women eat a mango a day for the first trimester because he says it helps to prevent miscarriage!! You never know WHO to listen to!!

Hello all,

I am now 9 1/2 weeks pregnant and just back from a week in Thailand where I could not eat anything except pasta and bread :( My tummy is big, very bloated though, not baby :( I already look about 7 months and as I am trying to hide it from work it is not easy.

I have my first appt at Tsun Yak hospital ((not sure on spelling) next Tuesday, what should I expect in my first appointment? DO you know what they test your blood for., I want to make sure it is as detailed as the UK as at home we test for everything? ALso will I get a scan at public? All advice welcome?

I have been very weepy this week and feel so so tired I can barely wake up, I can not wait to get to 2nd trimester.

How are all you other mummies?? Shall we arrange a lunch day soon and all meet up so we can compare bumps!!

Katie
xx

Keep the old wives tales coming - I'm loving reading them all

Nicole - Sorry to hear about your friend - I had a m/c last year and they really are devastating.

Kharel - Good luck for your scan on Tuesday. Not sure when they'll test your blood or what they'll test for. I had fertilty treatment so I had all the usual tests, i.e. rubella, HIV, Hep, etc before I got pg.

I had my 12 week nuchal scan and bloods earlier this week and got my results today and we're low risk - sooooo relieved.

Am off to the UK this weekend for three weeks - can't wait to see my family. If I miss the lunch, have a great time and I'll hopefully catch up with you all on the next one

Hello Ladies,

I am a first timer and pretty much terrified. This pregnancy
was unplanned, but we are trying to get out of the 'terrified mode' and move into euphoria. I feel super guilty about being so terrified and I must admit like all of you I too am weepy :(

I'm due in mid November, and have already had my initial obygyn
consultation. No scan yet...just lots of information.

I work full-time, but thankfully have been on holiday for the last 2 weeks (I teach as a NET with EDB).

I would love to meet other mama's and share this amazing experience.

You all seem absolutely lovely :)

Hey Bubbles! Nice to have you join us! I think a lot of us here are 1st timers too! So you're not alone! Well, I went through an excited phase at first - which lasted probably only one week (!?) looking forward to my bump etc etc... But then the thought of having something moving inside me started scaring me a little!?! And the thought of having a baby in the flat (we have a dog and two cats!)... with all the cables everywhere and sharp corners on tables etc etc... But, now I think I'm starting to get more of a bump and have started shopping for maternity clothes, it's got me all excited again! I'm in the second trimester now so I guess it's going to start getting a lot bigger soon! Now I can't wait! I'm always looking for that first kick, but thinking maybe it's just gas!! :P I thought I could feel something a few nights ago, but it lasted a long time so I reckon I must have been dreaming!!! :P

Nic - yes, I'm Chinese, raised in England. I only know of some old wives' tales - the mango thing my sis-in-law told me a few weeks ago (cos she knew how I love mangos!!). There are a lot of things they say you shouldn't eat, seafood - your baby will get eczema, melons - similar reason to mangos, I think... I'm not really sure what else, I'm not really following it... :P

Some other things you shouldn't do either, such as:

- no painting, otherwise your baby will have a big birthmark!
- no pushing pins into a pin cushion, it'd lead to miscarriage!
- no cutting/use of scissors, your baby will have a cleft palate!
- no digging/pounding, it'd lead to miscarriage!

Oh, and the way to tell whether you're having a boy or girl (when you have a big bump), if the bump is "pointy", it's a boy, if the bump in "round", it's a girl. But I guess people don't have to follow that nowadays since they can tell from the scans!

Oh, and as for Tsan Yuk, I'm registered there as well!

At the first appointment, they do a blood test, I think they said it tests for 9 things, can't remember them all, but included HIV, Hepatitis, rubella.... And you also get to book a date for your hospital tour (we're going on ours tomorrow!), antenatal talks, breastfeeding class and also book a date for a scan at QMH at around 20 weeks. And then you also make the next appointment to see the doctor, that's when they feel for your uterus and use the doppler machine to hear your baby's heartbeat!!!

Cos my dad has diabetes, I had to go again for a blood glucose test, had to drink this disgustingly sweet drink! But I think everyone has to do it at some point (if you dont' have fam history, then you do it at a later stage)

just came back from my third appointment. the baby looks like a shrimp now and meassures already 4 cm. the heart is strong and it looks all healthy. i am a little surprised about how how often, or better seldom you guys have a scan. you are talking about the ultrasound, or do i misunderstand that (sometimes my english leaves me, he he ). my doctor does an unltrasound every time i go. i have already three pictures.
pf- i love wour wive tales. but how can i avoid the cutting, i am a kindergarten teacher and art work is one of the main things to do. :-)

I just came back from my SECOND appointment - and it was pretty disappointing... Dr Ho was really rude and dismissive... I think it's because we told him we're going to Queen Mary, so he knows he's not getting all that money from us for the delivery - so he was really brushing us off... I was really disappointed!! Last time, he seemed really nice and friendly and everything - but this time, it was like "Let me check you and get you out of here as quick as possible!!"

We did get a scan though - and the baby is around 3cm, measuring at 9 weeks 3 days, which is exactly what I am, from my calculation!! It was so much change from the last one where it was just a little blob!! It has legs and was moving and you could see the head and the bum and everything - so cute!! Although the whole ultrasound was over in about 30 seconds :( stupid doctor!! That adds up to $20 per second ;)

I'm up for lunch any time!!

Oh - I booked my trip to Europe today! My brother lives in Denmark, so we're heading over there first, then going on a Princess cruise around the Baltic sea! We're going to Finland, Sweden, Norway, St Petersburg, Estonia... I think one other place but I forget... I'm really excited though!! I'll be around 16 weeks when we go - early in the 2nd trimester... I think it's a good time in the pregnancy to do something like that - I won't be so tired, but I won't be huge and awkward either...

Nicole - Dr Ho does blow hot and cold - sometimes he's really chatty and other times he hardly says a word. I think he's like that with everyone and he is a busy man. I found it quite rude initially as I'm used to the UK where Doctors and Consultants are very chatty and have a sense of humour where as here it's very matter of fact. He has a reputation as being an excellent Doctor though. Will you continue to see him? When do you have to register at QM?

Holiday sounds fab. I haven't seen much of that part of Europe and being from the UK I have no excuse - just that I'm a lazy a**e!!!

Hi Everyone,
I've been waiting to post to make sure I was past the 12 week mark, as I had two miscarriages in early pregnancy last year. I'm only 9 1/2 weeks, but can't wait any longer - its nice to know that others are going through similar emotions, troubles, etc, especially with a first pregnancy. Looking forward to hearing more from everyone!

Hi Nino

Hi Nino (and everyone else).....I know what you mean about wanting to tell people ...but having to wait just to be safe.

I've only told a few people (not even my mom and dad know), but it's nice to share it this way (on geobaby) - it feels safe.

Bubbles

Hi ladies
I just read ninos post and am exactly in the same situation as her!!!! Ive been lurking this post for the last 2 weeks or so but been too scared to post since i suffered a miscarriage late last year. Im also 9 1/2 weeks along and eager to join you ladies in this journey! I have a gorgeous 2 year old daughter so this is my third pregnancy, and hopefully will be my second child!

I havent told anybody about the pregnancy yet. We are just being a bit cautious since we have miscarried in the past.

We are due on October 28th and we are booked at the Matilda.

At first I didn't want to tell people - it took us over a YEAR to conceive... I had begun looking into fertility doctors and everything - but we ended up falling pregnant naturally! It just took us a while... but I was SO SCARED of miscarrying... my mother had a miscarriage when I was about 13, and I think it really affected me... it made me feel like it's "more likely" to happen with me - but I guess it's not really...

I've told THE WHOLE WORLD already though ;) lol - I just couldn't keep it a secret... hehe... well, I've told everyone except my boss anyway!!

Sooo... who's up for lunch? When and where? Is Central a good place for you all? Want to try for next week some time? Or maybe the week after? I think that any day is good for me...

Hi everyone, have been reading through all the posts and would love to join up for the lunch date!

We are expecting our first baby Oct 19th.

I've only been in Hong Kong for 3 months so getting used to a new city and working through the mine field of maternity/hospital systems has been a learning curve! Everyone seems to have great advice on this site!

I wish I felt comfortable enough to tell people - I've only told my mom and sister back in Canada. It would definitely help explain to those around me why I can't even stand the smell of certain foods and the mood swings I've been experiencing. We'll try to wait for the 12 week mark, but I can't believe no one has guessed yet!
I would be up for meeting everyone - or whoever can make it - for lunch or coffee sometime. I'm currently not working so have a pretty open schedule. Looking forward to meeting everyone! Have a good weekend!

Hi All,

Sorry I've been feeling a bit under the weather these past couple of days. It's awful. Poor baby hasn't been able to sleep with my constant coughing!!!

Re lunch, I think it'll be best for me to wait til next week - to let myself fully recover and also cos I'm anticipating a hectic week at work (with new club opening!!). Next Wed/Thur would be better for me. But if it's not suitable for others, then no worries!

Kharel - I've just had a thought, I thought Tsan Yuk only registers new mums on Wednesdays and Saturdays?!? That's what they told me when I called to make an appointment... And you had to be over 10 weeks preg. Maybe you might like to double check your appt date?

Hi everyone,

Wow, there are certainly a lot of posts here and I just spent my whole morning at work reading everything :P and getting to know you all.

I found out I was pregnant a month ago but at that time, the doctor didn't want to confirm anything since it was just a yolk on the scan. Today, he finally confirmed that there was a baby inside (duh!) as we can see him/her move. It's all very exciting even if it is my second time round. My due date is 5 Nov.

I remember wanting to buy maternity clothes, and this time, as my baby will be born in a totally different season to my other baby, I am going to allow myself to buy some more! haha

My baby girl will be 1 yr old next Monday, so my babies will be around 17months apart. I cannot imagine what a nightmare that might be since my baby girl is a real cheeky monkey and wants to play 24/7.

I had her at Queen Elizabeth hospital last year and they were excellent there. My baby was also prematuire by 7 weeks, so she stayed in ICU for 15 days before coming homw to us. This time round, I am debating whether to go public or private as it was really difficult last time with the limited visting hours at public hospitals. I really needed my husband there when I couldn't see my baby (as she was in ICU and I was tied to a drip). Will see...

I also work full time but for myself so am more flexible with time. I really hope to meet you all soon!
